Default fuel sending unit/gas gauge

Everytime i start my car, the needle points to Empty. Once i start driving, about ~5 minutes later, the needle slowly moves up to where it should be and stays there..If i never started driving theres a 20/80 chance it would go up on its own..People tell me if the fuel sending unit, but i dont understand how it works when i drive? I thought its either broken or its not..

I would think if it was the sending unit (like you said), it's either broken or it's not. Not too sure though. I know there are others more educated on the fuel system than I am though. Hopefully they chime in soon.
