Default Dumb question...

About to do my first oil change on my 2000. Read somewhere about using a pf59 Delco filter, yet I have recently seen some contradiction things about that filter and talk about a lack of a drainback valve.

I actually picked up a pf59 filter and some 5w 30 Mobil 1 oil tonight. I'm just hoping I made the right choice with what I bought. I'm used to old fashioned SBC motors... my IROC takes a pf35 long filter & 5 quarts of conventional oil - very cut and dry.

Anyhow, any personal experiences and feed back would be much appreciated. TIA & sorry for my long winded post.

I'm not much into remembering oil filter part numbers, but hopefully someone here has that info. Anyone?

I can't remember the long finlter part number either, but remember, these cars take 5.5 guarts of oil per oil change. I usually use 6 and have had not problems at all (to avoid oil starvation during high speed cornering, some guys use 7 quarts for the same reason).

PF59 sounds like it may be correct, but I can't remember for sure.

Yeap, I use that filter. Its the right one. If I remember correctly, its a truck filter. No oil starvation here. You got me curious though, I think I will do a little surgery to check the diff. between that one and the stocker.
I did this mod ever since I had the car new. 35K now and I run Synthetic 5W50 since my first change.

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated. I'm going to try and get the oil changed, do spark plugs, and four fresh radials all this Wed. - then head for the track. Everyone that drove it bone stock swore 13.60's or better... I'm thinking 13.8 or slower, I hope I'm wrong.

I understand you guys wanting more filtration but with my choices between more filtration with a larger filter or more oil in the pan and being in the necessary galleries in the engine especially at higher RPM, I choose the later.

The minimal difference in any filtration provided by a larger filter will not show up in a tangible amount of mileage added to the life of the vehicle. However, if more of your oil is in a filter being filtered and you run it to 6,250 (or beyond) less oil is in the pan keeping the mains wet and henceforth you may be doing more damage than solving with a larger filter.

The LS1 has a slight oil return problem at high RPM. This is why I'd rather have it in the pan ready to be pumped and keeping those mains wet.

I just use the larger filter, and "fill it up", best of both worlds. I don't suggest lowering the level in the pan with the larger filter (I use 6 quarts to avoid starvation).

But where does that compensation stop? Even using the stock PF44 I still fill it up to 7 quarts as is (I do spin mine up to 7k). Going to a PF59 I'd have to fill up to 7.5 or 8.

I never shift past 6200 (stock internals). I guess it's good for some applications and in ur case maybe not.
I'm happy with it.

I use a K&N oil filter HP-1007 (replacement for a Delco PF-44 filter) and Mobil 5W-30. It works good in mine, especially since I go 6000-7000 miles between oil changes.
Good luck getting some low ets!

Usually, when you get the rotating assembly in the oil....you have gone too far....

Even using the stock PF44 I still fill it up to 7 quarts as is (I do spin mine up to 7k). Going to a PF59 I'd have to fill up to 7.5 or 8.
I bet the difference in filter capacity is only a few ounces. I don't think a pf 59 will hold a 1/2 quart of oil (starting with it empty). The larger filter will handle more dirt or it will simplly cause less of a pressure drop across the filter element. It is simply less of a restriction. No miracle cure here....One thing to remember, the PF59 hangs lower and is in more danger of getting punctured by objects under the car. Just a thought.

Oh well, Derek is here... guess I can let the cat out of the bag. I have previously run the car about a week ago w/ just a lid & free mods...
#1 #2 #3 <- iced intake, longer cool down
60' 2.055 2.012 1.948
330 5.652 5.558 5.533
1/8 8.69 8.605 8.563
MPH 83.65 83.50 84.18
1000 11.319 11.252 11.188
1/4 13.544 13.496 13.410
MPH 104.16 104.30 104.62

This was my 1st time at the track w/ the car. All runs were made on worn factory Good year RS-A's. The track was very generous to me that day. I honestly didn't expect it to run any better than 14.00's.

I'm hoping w/ plugs, tires, oil & filter to at least duplicate my previous performance. I think I have gotten too used to the car in it's current state and that is why it feels slow to me.
