Default Anyone run no catback?

I'm running a stock exhaust system (with stock manifolds and all) with a cutout. I leave my cutout open all the time, and I've gotten so used to the sound that I don't think it's too loud anymore.

I was just wondering if anyone here has hacked off their catback system before and just dumped the I-pipe before the axle? Does it just sound like a cutout, but louder? Would there be too little back pressure? I figure I could also save a few pounds this way.

Edit: Sorry, please move to the external engine forum.

Be prepared to have the car rattle a lot. I have duals dumped at the axles. Stuff that didn't rattle before, rattles now.

What about backpressure? Will I be losing too much torque?

You don't want back pressure, having back pressure for torque is a myth. You need to concern yourself with exhaust scavenging. That may reduce your torque, increasing back pressure will not increase the torque.

As said, many run muffler-less even with LTs. Loud and annoying, unless drag only.

haha, I never capped my cutout either. I would get a 3" muffler for some tone and just dump it.

I ran without a catback with just a 3" ORY Y pipe and 3" I pipe with a turndown at the end and i had no rattling in the car what so ever. Its not to loud at all. Im currently running no mufflers or even a Y pipe just turndowns off of where the Y pipe bolts up. It is much much louder then the no catback setup. With the setup now i get alittle bit of rattling at 1200-1800 rpms, there is none at idle or above 2k rpms. There is still quite a bit of backpressure from the stock manifolds and the emissions exhaust off of the manifolds plus you dont need backpressure which is a whole diffrent arguement. I weighed the stock catback system and you cut off about 45 pounds, i cut about 90-100 pounds off just by running without a exhaust You dont think the exhaust weighs much but intell you cut it off and pick it up its like holy sh*t!

That setup makes great power too. I am going to do that in a little bit.

i daily drove mine for 4 years with the cutout constantly open, my cutout was located right after the y pipe merged. about 6 months ago i bought a vw dd so i took all the exhaust off after the y pipe. It really wasnt any louder but the tone difference was night and day. it no longer has a high frequency tinny sound that the cutout produced and it no longer sounds like im getting on it durring part throttle crusing. adding a turndown to the open y pipe made a slight difference but more importantly its keeping those exhaust gases off my dana and driveshaft. Ive got video from when i was running the cutout, i can shoot a quick vid sometime of the new exhaust setup if anyone would like

im thinking of removing my y-pipe and magnaflow catback and running borla XR1 right off the headers. i wonder how loud that would be and if it would have any gains?

When I first bought my 2000 A4 Z28 it was stone stock. I put a SLP lid on it & SLP Loudmouth catback. I didn't think it was loud enough, so I removed it & sold it and just left it open at the Y pipe (stock manifolds & catted stock Y) And it seemed like it ran better than it did with the SLP loudmouth. With just a SLP lid & Open stock Y pipe (2.73 gears) the car went 13.28 @ 107
