Im another who pulled it from the top. Take of your intake and all of you pullied junk, drop the trans and exhaust and its not as bad as you would think. About 6 hours to get it out on the ground and about 20 minutes to get the block back in. Its the first one that I ever did so those numbers are about as long as it would take you. Not to mention I had a case of beer to distract me during it all....lol.

I just did mine from the bottom. Didn't want to take any chances hurting the paint from the top.

I have no hoist. I did it in my garge with a cherry picker. Safety jacks and several floor jacks. I pulled it out sideways and used wheel dollies on the front wheels put the back wheels on steel car ramps. I liked the fact that the engine was just sitting there after on the kmember. And that trans was attached. When I was done and put in a 408.just bolted on my clutch and trans and put the engine on the new kmember even bolted on my twin turbos and had pretty much everything on and hooked up..power steering, alt, intake, etc.

Putting it back in went pretty well also. No regrets doing it my way either. It was heaven to install cam and heads and all that with the engine out.

Use a bolt that is at least an inch long. Can't remember what size it is, But you can test it by screwing it in befoere you hook up the chain. Once you have the Radiator, A/C Condensor, and all the Accesories removed, You pull the motor toward the front of the car before you lift it. This will increase your clearance under the Cowl. Since the Intake is off you should be able to get the bolt in the back of the head without to much problem. It is important to take all the Accesories off the front of the motor, Including the Power Steering pump. Do not take the hoses off the pump, Just unbolt it from the head. Also, when you unbolt the Tranny and Bellhousing, make sure you support the Tranny with some kind of a Jack.

I pulled mine from the top. it wasn't that bad. Just take your time and pics. Label everything. And + on using labeled zip lock bags-helped alot w/ nuts and bolts. You will need engine lift, QTP valley plate works excellent when pulling from the top. Also ratchet wrenches save alot of time. Exspecially on the top trans bolt on the bell housing. Good luck!

What If I wanted to just lower the the front subframe a little just to make the head/cam/fast install go easier? Like 3-6 inches without disconecting major components.?

You'd still have to disconnect your brake lines no matter what unless you want to risk bending them. Also I'd be a little worried about the wiring harness in certain areas.

Dont think its worth the effort to drop engine down to install cam and heads especially cam. Sure its nice to pull entire engine and do it all out of the car but that stuff can be done in the car not that big a deal.

+1 for out the top. If you reinstall from the top you just need to make sure that the chain on the engine isn't exactly on center. It's easier of you have the chain a little forward so the engine tips down in the back. The reason for this is the chain will hit the cowl when you install it if it is centered. Not a big deal, but it becomes a wrestling match otherwise......fortunately I won.

I've always done mine out the bottom, I've always had access to a Lift to do it though. Takes me about an hour to have it on the ground.

I went out the bottom on mine in the drive way. I think the best part about doing it that way is not having to dick around with the tranny under the car. Maybe it's just me but I HATE having to bolt up the tranny in the driveway
