Default Sewing Machine + Ticking/Knocking from collectors = ????

My car has this tick tick tick (sewing machine noise) when the motor is running. I think I have an exhaust leak but am unsure. Also when I turn my car off I hear a ticking knocking as well. Anyone know what this could be?

when you turn the car off, the ticking sound you hear is the exhaust cooling down. and while its running the sewing machine sound is somewhat normal on these cars, especially if you have an aftermarket valvetrain on

You will hear alot more noise with headers. This is due to the fact the heavy cast iron stock units did a really good job of deadening any engine noises coming from heads/motor.

Cold start, pull up on some ramps and get under the car. I would feel around the collector for exhaust leaks. You will feel it for sure. On that same note, if you hear a pretty audible "squeak" when goosing the throttle, that usually is a good indicator that you have exhaust leak. BTW, Did you use paper gaskets or reuse factory metal gaskets?

When it's cold dump some soap bubbles on it (aka gas leak detector, it'll bubble where it leaks)

The noise is the exhaust gas pulses coming through the thinner than stock steel.

When I had an exhaust leak the "tick tick tick" got much louder under load. I had some warranty work done on the driveline and the tech didn't get the driver's side rear header bolts torqued properly.

It's allready been covered but you get a bunch more noise w/ headers. The stock manifolds insulate all the noise.

It's most likely exhaust noise from the headers. Mine do the same and don't leak.
