Well... after my last review of the Volant intake and being less than thrilled about it... I decided to do some modding on the sealing part of the intake. Thanks to some tips from Nytmare I went ahead and started tackling the project... It was pretty simple, I just went down to home depot and picked up some pipe insulation... I opted to get a different type of insulation for a cleaner look. This has more of a smooth finish on the outside rather than the bubbly texture other guys are using for theirs... it was a little over $7 for about 6 ft...

basically just start trimming to fit... it's really not that hard. I put the new pipe insulation OVER the existing weatherstripping that the volant came with just to give it more support... anyways here's some pictures...

I still have a few more mods to do to this intake before I'm satisfied with it... like make some sort of radiator support so that my hoses and everything aren't resting against my pullies... which by the way has already cut my power steering hose in two coming from my power steering cooler

I also want to button down the two front corners of the airbox so that they sit flush with the engine bay frame...

 

Good job! I like the insulation you found better than mine. I might run to the store and pick some up.

yea, it seems to be pretty good stuff... I'm curious to see how it holds up to the engine bay/phoenix heat...

 

I use that stuff all the time doing a/c work. Thats the better brand. It lives in attics at 150* for years. What kills it is sunlight, which shouldn't be a problem under the hood.
It might shrink slightly in 10 years or so

Excellent work man. Did you notice the throttle response increase that other people have noted when the get a good seal on the airbox?

 

I sealed my box as well but with some foam copper insulation. The pull above 120 is HUGE!!!

 

I absolutely noticed throttle response... however until you just mentioned it, I credited that to my new FAST 36#ers I had installed at the same time... dunno which gave me the better throttle response... probably a little from both...

hmmm... I'll have to try that out, haven't taken her up that high yet since the install... too bad she's parked for a while, till I can figure out what's causing the sputtering/coughing at the high RPM range... I figure it's either a spark issue, or my stock fuel pump...

I live in an apartment complex with no garage or tools, so unfortunately this thing is gonna be parked for a while till I can figure out what's wrong with it

don't wanna run it, if something detrimental is wrong with it...

 

^^^ You wont really see or feel it until you are racing a car with similar mods. My buddy(an 02 CETA A4) and I had pretty much the same mods minus the Volant and de-baffled hood and we were dead even til 120. Once we hit 120 though i pulled considerably. I thought he had hit the brakes but he had stayed in it. We both were shocked to say the least. I have come from behind and won a quite a few races once we go past the 120 barrier. My buddy says my VTEC must kick in at 120.

i got it used, so the filters are a lil out of whack, but they work...

 

im picking up a 85mm TB (i will see how much modding i will need to do to fit it in the snout) and the 5 to 3 wire adapter so that filter i rigged up for the iat will be gone, since the 85mm maf has the iat sensor inside it... then i will cover that hole like i did the other based on your write up

 

I was going to try to make my own cai like those but i was going to do it out of extra sheet metal i have layin around and some cone filters but should i be worried about heat transfer through the metal or do you guys think it will be ok? I dont see any track time and it pretty much an everyday driver but im just looking to make it on the cheapo
