carb intakes for ls1's?
has anyone heard of carb intakes for the ls1 motor's?
i just got a 01 ls1 motor to use in my race car but i am wondering if i can use a carb on it

Re: carb intakes for ls1's?
I've never seen or heard of one personally. I doubt there would be anywhere close to enough demand for anyone to release one. Since the LS1 is a distributor-less engine to begin with, you'd still require a good bit of electronic control to make it run, so changing to a carb just isn't a very feasible thing IMHO...
I'm sure Hogan's or one of the other intake fabricators could build something on a one-off custom basis, though.

Re: carb intakes for ls1's?
well, if you're allready using the PCM to control the timing, whats the sense of using a carb to control the fuel?
sure you could make it work, but with the intakes, injectors, fuel rails, TB
s Maf's all readily avaliable, why not just use fuel injection?
now if you're limited to a carb setup, and unlimited on an ignition setup, in the class you run in, it could be a good idea. fabbing stuff up is just more work, but it'd be darn cool to see a carbed LS1.

the reason is we are going to use an ls1 motor but i dont want to have to switch the fuel systems for different motors (its going in a full chassis car)

Re: carb intakes for ls1's?
This very question has been in my thoughts for quite a while, now. Just so you guys have something to think about, somebody made up a sheet-metal carburetor intake for a 5.4 DOHC Ford engine. The last I heard it was faster than any NON forced induction or N2O LS1. 9.20's on nuts if I'm not mistaken. IMO, EFI is making up ground, but it still can't beat a well tuned carb set-up for all out naturally aspirated drag-race performance.
I see no reason that an LS1 couldn't kick the **** out of that Ford given the same ability to breathe.

Nice, how do you plan to make the ignition work?
Think about it. LS1's do not have distributors.
So you need to use the coil packs or come up with a solution.

Re: carb intakes for ls1's?
Can you run a distributor down through our blocks?
Sounds like a headache to me.

It could be done. But by the time you get it all figured out, you'll probably find that it's not worth the effort.

Re: carb intakes for ls1's?
Call ramchargers and see if they would make software for the Timeing Retard box that puts out a signal that will run a MSD igntion box. You just need a 20* wide low pulse at each top dead center event. Use the switches to adjust the static timing, timing curve? I have a small retard box in the works that has the correct output drivers to do this and a RS-232 interface to a pc for setting the parameters and programing. It will be a few months before I get more involved with the Nitrous on my car and this is on the back burner. At the moment I am working on Pro-Stock Harley Davidson ignition. I have never seen anything produce destructive forces like the vibration from a 2610cc(158 ci I think) v-twin engine. The guy that I am building this for says that if all is not right you cannot hang on to the handlebars. He said you just cant grab it tight enough. I have heard that these twins will scrap a MSD bike ignition in one pass. I guess that if my first attempt lasted for 8-10 passes I am on the right track. I have developed 1,400 volts AC on the coil primary. 4-5" arc in free air, kind of spooky. It will leave you having to think about your next breath of air if you get to close. Only did that once on a 10,000 RPM bench test.
Oops got side tracked, sorry
If you can wait a few months I will be able to a box with programable timing curve with retard by a +12V signal. I see traction control here. I would need a few bucks of course it takes $ to put these things together. The good news is Motorola has sent me some really cool, latest technology chips to work with. I want to run my nitrous solenoids right from the timing controller that is why I have n-channel MOSFET outputs already. I had 15 of these boards made. This is just the boards I have to solder the parts to them. PM me if interested. I have two input channels I could connect to the Cam sensor as well and with enough programming time have individual cyl timing. I can click off approx 25 million instructions per second with an enhanced timer system on chip.
Yes I love my job
You would have to have a Cam sensor in the equation and use one of the DIS igntion boxes - no distributor, duh.

Re: carb intakes for ls1's?
An LS1/LS6 carb'd intake is coming soon...
I can share the following...
LS1 carb'ed intake will be out sometime next year.
You will be able to use a crank trigger or a gear driven distrubtor. The distrubtor sets up in a very conventional manner. The design allows for mounting a fuel pump very similar to the way a SBC does. It's a very trick, very cool set up, with excellent potential.
With supporting mods etc, I'm sure this set up with a similar sized cam will give a similar fuel injected LS6 manifold set up more than it can handle NA.

Here you go. It is not a carb but pretty close as far as design goes.
