Default Open Y pipe?

Would there be any gains to benefit from if I dropped the stock cat back and ran the stock manifolds and y pipe open?

Im aware, but with a cut out some exhaust still travels through to the stock muffler. Im guessing open y would be less restrictive

I did that for a day back when I got my car. It sounds terrible. Like a trash truck with a rusted out muffler.

if you have stock manifolds it will sound like a 85 chevy pickup.

its best to have a muffler if your going to do that.

you can do it.. it sounds like crap. I'd at least clamp a bullet muffler onto the Y pipe just to give a decent sound.

get a cutout if your not going to follow emission laws you might as well remove the cats and put on a cutout. You will get the most gains

You guys are nuts, we ran a cutout on the Bird for years on stock manifolds/Y and it wasn't that bad. Sure it doesn't sound that great compared to long tubes, ORY, and a catback - but sure works on a budget.

i ran my longtubes and y open for a couple days before i got it my cutout welded in and hooked up with my catcack. i think it sounded better than the cutout, my cutout has this terrible vibrating raspy sound at like 2000 rpm that wasnt near as bad with the open y...i would put a bullet or something on it though check the classifieds here and you will be able to find something to clamp on there for cheap!

It sounds good if you dig dump trucks. Maybe try a chambered muffler like a sweet thunder or power stick dumped off the Y?

If you are primarily stock you may get a benefit from it. I would personally just have a 3" cutout welded on. You will most likely see the same gain, and this will actually divert your exhaust enough to give you less problems for your undercarriage: ie: Brake lines, blacked floorboards. Also you will have the option to cap it off if it gets annoying.

I dont mind the sound, I have ran this before on my last camaro, i was more so wondering if you'd get a better performance gain then a catback. This is only temporary until i get headers and y pipe, I have a 3'' cut out for that which i plan to run w/ the stock catback.

Oh yeah dude, I love loud too and agree it would probably sound different with LTs. I'm getting catless 3" duals dumped at the axle with 16" powersticks off of Kooks LTs soon There's a guy over at z28.com with an LS1 car running pacesetter LTs through an ORY and no muffler (out the back though) and it sounds great. The OP said stock manifolds though. Then again since it sounds like he's keeping the cats and what I've heard before was stock manifolds, open Y, no cats.

ya good point i dont know what maniflods with cats would sound like, has to be better than stock though my car was so quiet it was sickening. that sounds like a nice setup you are going to have. i am getting the TSP duals with sweet thunders myself as soon as the budget will allow for it
