Default Y-Pipe Hitting undercarriage; HELP!

I have noticed that when I am turning the vehicle to the left or right, and break the tires loose, I hear a loud thumping coming from underneath the car. I was told it might be the torsion arm bushing at the transmisison. Today I had the car on a lift, and noticed the torsion arm bushing was fine. However, the y-pipe is hitting the undercarriage on the driver's side. I put a piece of rubber hose in between, took it for a test run, and the noise was gone.

My question is, what would be the best way to correct this? The vehicle is a 2000 WS6, manual transmission, with long tube headers and a no cats. The y-pipe is hitting JUST after where the cats would be.

Thanks a lot for any help or suggestions!!!!

Get polyurethane engine mounts. Or solid.

Getting that special hanger that someone makes or stuffing something in there is not the answer.
Headers are not designed to hold the engine from twisting, and stuffing something between the header and frame puts all the twisting force on that header.

If that piece of **** keeps the header from hitting the floor it also puts too much stress on the header. The header is not designed to hold the engine down. People shouldn't make products that do this.

other option is to clearance the frame by notching it above the exhaust and rewelding it.
if done right it would be as stiff as stock. and you proably only need to remove about 1/4".

or you could clearance the exhaust pipe...again 1/4" would probably be enough, and would have negligable affect on exhaust flow.

flowtech did it to their Ypipe from the factory...i already had poly motor mounts so i'm not sure how it would have worked stock. but it definatly helpped.

I simply got some heater hose and placed it between my True Duals/body...
Cut the hose open, screwed ot to the undercarriage... Banging, vibration GONE!

Just my .02

I made my own exaust hangers and did both sides. I know this is not the right thing to do, but it works, and doing both sides instead of just one distributes the stress better.

I also screwed a piece of water/heater hose to the frame rail also just in case.

I will probably do the poly motor mounts when I can though.

I put poly mounts in and it still didn't fix the problem. I'm going to look into a poly trans mount, maybe i'm getting some flex there...

I actually have been using the aforementioned Thunder Racing Y-pipe bump stop bracket for years with the HP/TQ in my sig and no problems. While the poly mounts will probably solve the problem - you must also realize that you are going to feel much more vibration from engine/tranny thru car after their install - this will happen when replacing the factory compliant mounts with a mount that is not compliant. If you don't mind putting up with that vibration - then go for the mounts.

There is a reason factory uses engine/tranny/suspension rubber compliant mounts - because most people would be unhappy with the inherent vibration felt with less complaint bushings/mounts...

This is why when we re-designed our Y-pipe we add a mount to the drivers side.
This will stop the Y from ever hitting the floor.
I still have stock mounts on my own car and have never had the Y hit the floor.
It can't

Most likely. For the $25 its well worth the upgrade.

As a test, put your car in first gear from a roll, and punch the gas and let off. Notice how much the shifter moves. If it really jumps over, its moving too much. With ym poly engine/trans mounts, you have to watch very closely to see it budge
