Default How do I know what my Final Gears are?

Since the search isn't working lately I can't find out by searching. So...

How can I tell what I have? I've messed around with the computer a lot so the "RPM at 60/70 mph" way won't work.

Thanks!

If you are referring to what gears are in the axle itself, you can use the code on the door to find out. another way to do it that is pretty easy is to jack the car up, crawl under it and watch the driveshaft while someone spins the tire one whole revolution, for example, if they spin the tire 1 revolution, and the driveshaft spun around 3 1/2 times then you have a 3.42 in the axle, if the driveshaft spun around 3 and 3/4 times then it would be a 3.73, and so on and so on. Hope this helps

assuming stock rear end:

m6 is 3.42....all were from 94+

and what does messing with the computer have to do with your gear ratio? or did you change the speedo settings even though you didn't change gears? and if so...WHY?

auto will have either 3.23 or 2.73

pull the trans into 1st....speed up to 15mph

if you're going 1600rpm you have 2.73
if you're going 2000rpm you have 3.23

I have an auto. I was mentioning the computer to let people know that the last technique you mentioned might not work.

When I say that I adjusted the computer settings I mean the Rev Limiter and the Shift Points... on of those hypertech power programmers... it came with the car when I bought it used.

I'll try the code on the door (don't have anything to lift the car with). Do you know anything specific or should I ask around?

Thank you in advance.

shift points and rev limiter have little to do with gears.

and the method i mentioned eliminates both....use 1st gear and only 1600-2000rpm.

You can try using this program and see what rpms you are running.

Transmission Calculator - Chevy Camaro Z28 (6 Speed)

I would suggest that you use an OBDII scanner to track your RPMS and speed not the cluster since in my experience they are not the most actuate especially factory tachs.

No problem
it's just that you may get more answers if you posted in the General or newbie sections or the Rearend section for that matter.

Stock Gear Ratios:
M6: 3.42
A4 Standard: 2.73 (GU2 code on the door sticker)
A4 Performance Axel: 3.23 (GU5 code on the door sticker)
WS6 and SS models came with 3.23s.
Your A4 did not come with 3.42s.
If your sticker is gone you tell which gears you have by your highway rpms:
3.23s @ 2000 rpm = 67 mph; 2.73s @ 2000 rpm = 80 mph
3.15s were available in A4 Vettes

AHA! GU5 - I got 3.23s. That would explain why I'm beating my buddy's car with more mods than mine.

Thanks everyone!

Sorry the Vin won't tell you.
Best bet is to do like said above in post #2
Spin the wheels one rotation. And count how many times the driveshaft spins for that one rotation of the wheel. Mark the shaft with a chalk line or something similar.

if i remember correctly on the LT1s

if you have the option on the shift column to use 1st gear...than you have 3.23s
if you don't than they are 2.73s

its easily modified to allow the use of 1st...but if the console doesn't have a 1st than you have 2.73s
