1 3/4 vs 1 7/8 inch headers which should I buy?
Trying to decide between a coated Hooker Comp header in 1 3/4 vs 1 7/8. My car is undergoing a transformation at the moment it will have Livernois Stg 3 heads, Livernois Stage 2 Cam, ported fast intake and t/b and a new maf. At this power level should I go ahead and spring for the 1 7/8? or 1 3/4. I also plan on doing nitrous in the near future and a big cube shorblock probably 2 years down the road. But at this power level now ~450-460ish rwhp do the 1 3/4" become less efficient?
Thanks!
Thanks!

if you plan on going bigger later then i would suggest the 1 7/8". i have these and glad i got em. i would recommend them to even stock internal guys. you're gonna lose a bit on the low end but its a different animal when revved up. i would say they would be a wise investment. if you like your torque coming in early then the 1 3/4" is for you but since you are running a cam and ported heads then you'd be crazy not to run 1 7/8".

i have them on my SI car, with the 3.42 it had enough torque to get my around below 2000rpm, but it really woke up at 1900, you could hear the exhaust get substantially louder at 1900, below that it sounded stock
with the 4.11 now its always loud and always has a lot or torque
just a reference, but id go mostly on price (i got these QTPs for 325 so it was a no brainer for me)

If you have the budget, get the Kooks or ARH. If you even MIGHT go bigger or H/C/I later, get the bigger primaries. It's an absolute myth that you will "lose torque down low." With a proper tune, you will gain down low. You may gain a couple more foot pounds with the 1 3/4, but both are gains. Don't believe that you will lose for a second, but you DO need a tune. I spent the coin so as to NEVER need to buy headers again, I am glad I did. I ran over a grapefruit-sized piece of hardened concrete, apocalyptic-sounding direct hit to primary...only a tiny dent. The ARHs are tremendous quality pieces and having seen the Kooks in person, they seem every bit their equal. It is a function of budget though. If I had to buy cheaper, I'd have gone for TSP's big tube headers.
AGAIN, you will NOT lose torque with the bigger tubes. You need to search this topic, it's been beaten to death. Only pay attention to those with experience and graphs to support. You DO need a tune for any full exhaust setup, even a stock car benefits from a proper dyno/street tune. Many have seen 20-30 hp and ft lbs.

I run a 1 3/4 X 1 7/8 stepped header from kooks and like it alot. I think it is a nice compromise.
At the end of the day, I don't think it will matter a whole lot. The 1 3/4" header is plenty for the 346.... even with an agressive heads/cam setup.
