Are MAF ends a good mod or can they cause problems?
They are known for causing problems... They can screw with your A/F ratio and timing and do more harm than good, and throw out some SES lights as well. Some have had good results with them, some have not. It's a gamble really. I got unlucky and switched back to stock. You will hear a lot of people who switch back to stock. They are even worse if you have an A4 tranny. They affect the line pressure and change shift firmness, severly decreasing the life of the tranny. If you are going to do anything, just remove the screen. Wait until you are making 450rwhp do do anything else with the MAF sensor.
i am one of the people who has had good luck with mass air ends.i went from 13.10 to 12.95 and have noticed no problems at all from my car. i had them before and after my head and cam set up and the car was dyno tuned with them two years ago. my car is a 01 m6 and i am switching back to stock for my n.o.s use.
I've had good luck with my MAF ends- my car runs strong and dynoed well with my basic mods (including the MAF ends). Did the MAF ends help? Maybe- I don't think they hurt me. But it's easy to see I'm in the minority. I probably wouldn't have done it based on what I know now.

It could be based on a combination of things some mods work well together and others don't a fellow ls-1 tech guy used a Whisper carbon fiber lid and Whisper ported MAF ends K&N filter and ran a 13.15@105.38mph on a bone stock 99,SS auto, then he added Free Mods: Ram-AIR (!FRA) Cut EGR(!EGR) Timing Tricker(!TT) almost free- BMR Throttle Body coolant bypass(!TB) allmost free and ran a 12.96@106.67 then added subframe connectors, whisper ss cat- back, ported throttle body,HypertechppIII&160 power stat and ran a slower 13.06@106.95 Thats alot of money to run slower.

LOL! Thanks for using my car as an example... but, the reason the car went slower was the owner not the setup. I needed to learn how to set the shift points corretly
When I did get it figured out.. the car went 13.10@107.09 (2.06), 13.01@107.99 (1.98) and 12.94@107.91 (1.98) with the addition of a cutout
Not to mention... your comparing runs that happened in drastically different weather and traction conditions (60ft).
I ported them on my '98 two years ago and have had zero problems. Haven't had my car to the track or anything, so I don't have any numbers to back anything up, however I felt a bit more SOTP in the top end. Just be careful, some websites will tell you to port the actual sensor too, that I would not reccomend.
