Default Need Some Advice on Removing the Motor

Hey guys,

As some of you may know, I threw a rod.. and the motor is coming out. A friend of mine is going to help me pull the motor. He said we're going to pull it out from the top. I know some of you suggest taking it out from the bottom. Which is easier?

Since we'll probably be removing it from the top, what should I start removing? Empty radiator, remove the lid/maf/tb, radiator, all that stuff. Should I remove the intake and the heads?

There isn't a "How To Remove LS1 motor writeup" is there?

Thanks guys

Damn. Thanks for the reply. Looks like I'll have to be taking it out from the top. So far I've removed the tb/maf/lid/radiator cover, intake, and valve covers. If I'm going to hoist the motor out the top, would it be better to leave the heads in? Or can I remove the heads?

Brian make sure you take your hood off

Just remove the top half of your motor, drain your radiator and you should be good to go..

Obviously you need to remove your LTs

Putting a bolt-on LS1 back in and possibly selling it this spring/summer.

I'll choose whether or not I want to keep it once the next motor is in.

i got a question and im sure it might apply here to brian....

how does one go about removing LT's? My pacesetter headers are "crushed" onto my y pipe with those u shaped exhaust clamps. How the hell do you remove the headers from the y pipe like that (without the use of a sawzall)

first off, sorry to hear about your misfortune. that sucks.

in your situation I don't think it's necessary to fully take out the headers. you should be able to remove the spark plugs, and just unbolt the headers and pull them back a little bit away from the engine and just let them hang to the side. would be much easier to re-install the headers once you're done.

you also don't really need to remove the heads. it's actually a worse job going that route. one thing to be concerned with is your crank pulley when pulling the motor out the top, because it's somewhat a pita to clear the horizontal frame up front... although I pulled the trans out too with the engine.

You use a cheap tool called an exhaust pipe disconnect tool. Its basically two exhaust clamps with threaded rods in between. You tighten both of the clamps down on either side of the joint. Then unscrew the threaded rods and that drives the joint apart....
