Default AC Delco PF46 redesigned?

So it was my first weekend free from work since October and I decided to do my oil change and diff oil change too. I took my oil filter off, and put it on my work bench. I opened the new PF46, and noticed a HUGE external difference. The new PF46 is shorter, and has a redesigned mounting face. The part number for the PF46 AC Delco oil filter also changed, check out the difference from the old design, and the new design....

Yeah, AC Delco filters are junk these days, poor assembly, cardboard ends, kinda like Fram's. GM don't make them anymore. Run away from them.

Good store bought filters are Mobil 1, Royal Purple (if you can afford it!) Wix (Car Quest) and Hastings.

I keep a stock of Cummings/Fleetguard LF16104 filters on a shelf right next to the German Castrol.

GM has outsourced the oil filters to Wix or Champion Labs for at least 8-10 years.

Sorry, yes, add K&N to the "good" list.

Never heard of it. I've always heard that John Deere's quality control and component source traceability was on the level of the space shuttle. I'm sure their filters are pretty good. I can't imagine they have filters that fit car applications. I can't find them.

I put John Deere filter on my 98 5.7 vortec, and my Focus which I thankfully dont have anymore. The seem like a heavy dutyish filter. They at least got some weight to them, and the can doesnt krinkle up like a Pepsi can.

I was just curious if anyone ever heard of the quality or had other experience with them.

Ive also heard they are a good source for metric fasteners, but Ive never gone in and asked about it.

Fram's are pretty much considered the worst filter out there. If you are trying to be budget minded, Purolater would be a better choice.

You should get someone to send you a big box of K&N, Mobil1 or Wix filters.

Hey Cutlass, what filter number did you use and how did you determine it was the correct one/size?

I've already read this post, but can someone tell me exactly what makes the AC Delco filters no longer a quality oil filter?

I've been using them on all my vehicles for as long as I've been driving and have never had a problem.

Do this:

- compare the ends of them, see which has the thicker plate and gasket,

- weigh them, see which is heavier,

- see if you can dimple the sides with your bare hands,

- cut them open, see which is harder to cut open, measure the thickness of the sheet metal, compare the drain back valve, unravel the filter material and lay it out measure its length and compare the material.
