Just get a 85mm truck MAF and descreen it yourself...now you got a Z06 MAF

Not really

No, it's not better just because it doesn't have a screen. Many applications benefit from a screen, many don't. there really isn't an answer I can give as to which you would need or why without running into huge arguments on the forum as to the benefits or downfalls of one vs the other. I personally run a standard screened 85mm MAF and for any average setup it will do great.

[QUOTE=Scoggin Dickey;13092589]Not really

why is that? seems that most people are descreening a truck MAF and saying it's the same as the Z06. Can you elaborate on this a bit more? Would love to understand this further.Much appreciated
Thanks

Smile MAF solution

OK, here is the new MAF solution. I didn't want a MAF smaller than my air cleaner 3.5" (89mm) and if I go too big (100) the velocity is less and the MAF may be less accurate. So I bought a LS7 MAF sensor and a 4" OD aluminum tube 3.5" ID. This fits right over my air cleaner tube, and my connector hose fits over the OD of the tube (4.0"). I tapered the outside where it fits over the AC, and taper bored out the last 1.5" of the inside to make a smooth transition from the 3.5 ID to the 4.0 ID. The sensor is in the middle of the tube that is 89mm.

I copied the MAF table from a 08 Vette. Some of the frequency numbers did not line up with my 99, so I had to fill in the blanks every fifth number. Started the car, it was rich, leaned out the whole MAF 10% two times, and.... IT RUNS GREAT. Wideband A/F is right on. I have been tuning my VE for years, so it is right on, and the car is way smoother to drive with the MAF. I'm going to dyno next month to see if I lost anything with that small sensor in the airflow. Will try dyno with MAF and SD.
The last picture is the exit that is bored from 3.5" (89mm) to 3.9" (99mm)

nice. does this require the MAF harness to go from an LS1 MAF to the LS7 MAF? also if you dont mind me asking, how much was the LS7 MAF?

Harness adaptor from autowiringsolutions on Ebay. They make several versions so double check your connectors before ordering. GMPP has the sensor 15865791 for $54 and the mounting block 19166574 for $11, pretty reasonable. The aluminum tube is a little more difficult to find. I bought 1 foot from a metals place in Seattle for about $25. Made two MAF from it. Took about two hours on the milling machine and lathe.

is it tapered on the inside as well as the outside? or is it one ID and a tapered OD?

Both: The outside is just tapered on the front where it fits onto the air cleaner, that's just for looks.
The inside is tapered for the last 1.5", so the inside changes from 3.5 at the sensor, to 3.9 at end. I attached a pdf with a cross section if you want to make one it will give you the general idea.

Nice. Thanks for the update and pics. That taper on the pipe is above and beyond. Glad to hear it worked out.

I'm trying to make a MAF next week. I have a piece of 4 inch OD aluminum on the way with 0.065 wall thickness, so it will be 98 mm.

That 4" should work fine. A lot of people use them.
I used a 4" thick wall tube so the ID is smaller (89). The air should have more velocity with a smaller hole, maybe the sensor will be more acurate at low speed, that was my theory. If it ever stops raining here in the Northwest, I'm going to work on MAF tuning. My car runs great at WOT, it's just the cruising that I'm trying to refine. The MAF makes a world of difference. Good luck tuning.
