I am getting parts together to do a head and cam swap.

What is the best under drive pulley to get? I will have the pulley off so I know now is the best time to do it.

 

The best and expensive one? Or the better and cheaper one?

 

What is the best for the price? I do not want to spend a fortune but I also do not want to make a mistake and buy junk.

 

It sounds like SLP or Powerbond. There have been several posts about the ASP separating...definitely wouldn't recommend that.

 

ATI. Not cheap though.

how much do underdrive pulleys do for the car...

 

just dont get a cheepo, remember if it does not kill the vibrations you might be buying a new engine.

 

The best and the cheapest do not mix.. ATI Superdamper is the best, I offer it for $425 to you door with a new seal 10% UD with a/c

 

Best bang for your buck, Powerbond pulley.

 

So what make ATI I worth twice the price? I don't have a problem with paying for something if it is worth it. But twice the price?

 

They free up around 7 hp.

I personally like slp, especially if you have a lid and maf, I like to stay consistent.

 

Design, machining, rubber, assembly.... its night and day.

You have so many options with an ATI from the durrometer rubbers to adding crank triggers I can't even list them all ... to being fully rebuild-able. They are the damper of choice for professional race teams.

Its bolted together from cnc machined parts and can not come apart in the same way others do come apart. ( Most of the others are cast)


Cheap *** pulley's are not in the same league.

Powerbond ..... is bonded where the ATI is bolted and can not fail in the same way a bonded pulley can fail.

Weight.. the ATI is lighter

I'm doing a cam swap this month, and I've called several speed shops to inquire about an underdrive pulley.

The majority mentioned that for a daily driver (as mine is), a 25% underdrive pulley would affect the charging of the alternator and could also possibly lead to overheating in the warmer months (as the pulley slows down the waterpump).

I suppose an overdrive alternator pulley would combat this, but wouldn't that defeat the purpose of freeing up hp?

I've been recommended a 10% underdrive, but would that even be worth the money?

Guys with pulleys, is this the case? From what I've read on the board, this doesn't always seem to be an issue, but is it worth taking the chance for 7ish hp?

Thoughts? Input?
