Yup, now it's me digging up an old thread.

I just bought a bunch of Wix air filters from my buddy who's a CarQuest rep. Wix makes the filters for CarQuest. The CarQuest number is 88144, Wix number is 46144.

It does look waaay better than the standard filters available at the usual retailers. It's US made and can be had at Amazon for as low as six bucks. I've taken some comparison pictures with the Fram filter I just removed from my car.

The pleat count is 142 for the Wix, 106 for the Fram.

Both ls1's that ive bought had k&n filters on them when I purchased the car. The only reason I dont mind running them is because with an aftermarket ram air setup, more water and moisture gets up on the bottom of the intake if its raining really bad and I get caught in a bad storm with the car so having a paper filter in that situation is not going to be good and I would have to change filters much more often that way whereas the k&n can just be removed and dried and put back or cleaned and put back, no harm done.
I just make sure to keep it clean all the time and not over-oil it and there has been no problems. How many people do you guys know that have had a motor let go because of an air filter no doing its job on an N/A setup? Seriously....if your engine blows cuz of a microscopic piece of dirt, you've got more serious problems.

FWIW: When I had my car tuned, the guy said he took my K&N filter out and it actually lost power. (no filter dyno pull)

Except that high silicate levels in the oil (which is a common problem with oiled cotton-media filters, due to their poor filtration) can directly lead to engine problems. It's not "one microscopic piece of dirt" that hurts the engine; it's the long-term high levels of dirt in the oil that does it.

Sorry to bring up an old post but I took my STP filter out of my car recently at the drag strip and picked up almost 3 mph. The temperatures dropping as the night went on helped too but not that much. Went from upper 80's to low 60's.

I'd bet that temperature drop helped more than you think.

people still think air filters make power?

I strongly dislike wet filters (oiled), too many horror stories.
K&N fits like **** inside my lid, it doesn't seal at all.
Wix fits PERFECT. Best paper filter made by far.

Its a filter. Pick the one that does its job best. Filtering.

i removed my k&n filter from the car and picked up almost 2 mph. no, it wasn't 10 years old and/or dirty as ****.

every vehicle i've ever taken to the track gained at least 1 mph from removing the filter. my stock 2.3 ford ranger picked up 1.5 lol.

Sometimes having an air filter aids airflow movement vs. no filter.

Carburetor cars benefit from this.

^ x10000000000

Its not the filtration that hinders/improves performance.
Its HOW the air moves.

Its the same thought as a screened/descreened MAF.
You want the air to go as STRAIGHT as possible, less turbulence, more speed.

I'll be keeping my filter in the car at all times, there are too many variables (even running in a auto car at the same track 5 min later) to say "I removed my filter and gained 2mph".

Not familiar with AEM. ow do their dry panels compare to Amsoil (Donaldson) Ea's which are a pretty solid filter.

'ZACKLY.

I was thinking along the lines of the MAF screen but I didn't want to turn this into yet another MAF screen thing.

MAF screen is for sensor accuracy not to straighten the air for performance reasons. Apples an oranges there. Terrible analogy.
