Good Thermostat for a 01 SS?
What thermostat should I get?(Company)
A 180 degree or 160 degree?
What do I need to do for it to work properly?
Keep in mind I want the absolute most performance I can possible get from a thermo.

What you need most is to get the fans to run
below the 'stat's actual "pivot" temperature.
If you did this you'd have a solid 194F with
the stocker (not anywhere between 194
and 220, depending on how you drove in
the last 5 minutes). Makes a huge difference
in stop & go driving.
Hypertech 160 makes a 175F coolant temp
given that you have the fans set to support it.
If you don't, it just means that your tune has
to be good over a 50 degree swing in coolant
temp instead of 25. Which usually would mean
leaving some extra fuel and short timing in the
mix, beyond what you could get away with in
a tighter setup.
I'd call a 180F rated 'stat "don't bother".
I can't say as I've seen any big performance
improvement from my H160, but I like cooler
philosophically, and it hasn't seemed to cost me
anything (other than the 50 bucks).

Your 01 has a 180 in it now. If you go to the dealer and ask for a new one they will hand you a 180. To run cooler just lower your fan settings. And even if you go for the 160 your temp gauge is still going to read around 210, it's just the way these gauges are, more like and idiot light.
