Bad stuff in crankcase?
Bad stuff in crankcase? I had a knock sensor failure last week, so I went in this weekend to replace both of them. When I tore everything down, the front knock sensor (the one that was throwing the code) was submerged in water and chemicals (engine cleaner, etc) from years of cleaning the engine. It was corroded and just plain nasty.
The rear one, however, had no fluid in it at all but was dark brown (looked burnt). The boot for the rear one had fallen down on it's shaft and was obviously exposing the knock sensor to oil. The fear I have is that with the boot being out of place, all the crap that was in the front sensor found its way into the crankcase via the back sensor (it should have been full, too).
I've been cleaning the engine for years, and there was no sign of any corrosion on the back, i can only assume it's been out of place for a while. I'm concerned about bearing surfaces, etc. Any suggestions on what to do here? I have very little $$ these days and can't afford to tear it down any further (it's also my dialy driver, called in "car sick" today).
I did replace the sensors (both) and sealed around the boots on the top of the valley cover, so this shouldn't happen again.
