Default SLP 85mm MAF: curious about problems....

PPL are always saying that the SLP 85mm MAF is junk and i want to know why. i currently run a SLP 85mm MAF and have no issues with it, none at all, and i use the K&N FIPK II intake system so i clean and oil the filter.

Is it hard to tune or something? hell, ive had it for two years now, ran it on my bolt on 2000 with no tune with same intake system and now on my 01 with a decent sized cam, same intake system, but was originally tuned with a FTP lid, stock MAF, and ported stock tb, and have had no issues with it. i do admit that i would like to get a tune down with this intake system on it now but that is besides the point.

my question still stands, why do ppl say it is junk and dont give an explanation, i want answers, anybody's input is welcome as long as it beneficial to the thread, thanx.

I don't have a problem with mine. The only thing I can think of is it may be a bit harder to tune, but who cares? Your tuner or future tuner doesn't like it go somewhere else. I have only ever seen that excuse. Throws off the tune or it is hard to tune. Big deal!

It's more difficult to tune with, but it can be done, and the car will run fine with it. I'm running one on a stockish tune and I have zero problems.

ive never had to take mine to a tuner but i should now to get this intake to be tuned together with the set up instead of the stock maf and tb. but a lot of ppl dont even say that you know, just oh, its junk, dont work worth a crap, usless, etc. but im with you guys, i dont have a problem with it and even removed the screen and ive heard others say that it will screw up the air flow and such but still works fine.

oh, question to Breathing Fire, how do you like the typhoon on your car, i dont know if you tried the ls6 before the typhoon but i know it gives so much more then the ls1, maybe not that much more over an ls6, just curious how you like it?

I've just never fully understood the mod, unless you've got an aftermarket intake setup to complement it. No matter how big the airbox/ MAF is, you're still going to have to push it all through the stock 78mm intake opening.

true but you are using a larger volume of air through a small opening which in turn would create a larger amount of air being pushed into the cylinders at a faster rate, think of it like water being pushed from a large hose into a smaller diameter hose through a spout, it will be much faster.

or also you can port the mouth on a stock intake to 80 or 85mm to complement it with a larger tb

I'm going through the exact same question on my 01 WS6. Just put on the SLP lid and smooth baffle and I need to replace the maf. Got on here to find out if the 85 mm was worth it. I keep finding a lot of people saying its crap but for no real reason.

Only thing I've seen being said consistently is that you might lose some low end (which unless you have slicks on is probably a bit of a good thing) and gain on the mid/high end.

I ordered the SLP 85mm this morning ... I'll let you know if I have any problems. Currently have long tubes with free flow cats and already tuned.

so the poll says three dislike's with no reason why. and i agree with john563, they maybe a bit harder to tune with but if you're paying 500 for a dyno and tune session you better get what you pay for. i had mine with just an intake mod, then pp throttle body, then an 85mm throttle body, then long tubes with ORY and cat back, now switched over to another car with same intake set up but with true duals and no cats, and a fairly aggressive cam and still nothing wrong. i say its a decent mad, maybe a bit pricey for a new one, but in the long run it leaves room for mods and wont have to worry about a choking effect in the intake track with a 75mm.
