if you are getting a tune your fine with anything really, i know several people not running screens, 10rwhp thats a joke....you might get 3 rwhp switching from a stock maf to the 85 if you got it tuned both times....

yea, your not going to see 10 RWHP, 1-3 at the most! This is considered a "free mod" and is kinda like the whole "m6 vs a4" debate on this site. Some people think its the best mod in the world and others think its best left the way it is. My only reason for not taking the screen out is b/c ive seen pictures of people finding bugs and other random stuff in there screen, so I would rather not have that go in my engine IF by some chance my lid pops out of place and I dont notice.

That screen is there to straighten the airflow so the sensor can read the airflow more accurately - it probably limits the total amount of air that can flow through at any one time, but in return, you end up with more stable readings - if the PCM can't tell how much air is blowing over the heated wires of the MAF, it usually isn't very happy.

yeah gonna leave it alone, but might get a larger lid to match my SLP maf..I pm message some guy who got 6rwhp by ditching his other lid in favor of a FTP 98mm lid to match his slp maf so might go that route

[QUOTE=libertyforall1776;13559064]Really? I want to see the dyno proof!
yeah thats why I pm message to see if he has actual proof of it..Been thinking of going with a clear lid just for looks but in no hurry to do so but if by go larger shows a 6rwhp it might make the move come sooner

I think the difference is negligable. Plenty of guys running without screens without issue. Better ways to unlock a bit more power, sure but it shouldnt hurt anything. I have done my car and severl others back when I had a MAF sensor and it didnt cause any issues at idle.

If you do some poking around on tuning forums (like HPTuners' forum), it is pretty well documented with data to back it up. I actually had to deal with flow straightening devices for my master's degree, and that honeycomb mesh on the MAF fits that bill quite nicely.
