if you are getting a tune your fine with anything really, i know several people not running screens, 10rwhp thats a joke....you might get 3 rwhp switching from a stock maf to the 85 if you got it tuned both times....

I removed mine on my stocker. 2 years no problems. Don't see how it helped, I just did it anyway. Maybe good for 1rwhp untuned at the most. I wouldn't do it again.

yea, your not going to see 10 RWHP, 1-3 at the most! This is considered a "free mod" and is kinda like the whole "m6 vs a4" debate on this site. Some people think its the best mod in the world and others think its best left the way it is. My only reason for not taking the screen out is b/c ive seen pictures of people finding bugs and other random stuff in there screen, so I would rather not have that go in my engine IF by some chance my lid pops out of place and I dont notice.

you aren't gonna see 10hp from descreening. mine is descreened and i'm lucky if it gained me 1hp.

That screen is there to straighten the airflow so the sensor can read the airflow more accurately - it probably limits the total amount of air that can flow through at any one time, but in return, you end up with more stable readings - if the PCM can't tell how much air is blowing over the heated wires of the MAF, it usually isn't very happy.

Remove it at your own risk.

Really? I want to see the dyno proof!

I have heard from Speed Inc. it is more challenging to tune cars with aftermarket MAFs.

I think the difference is negligable. Plenty of guys running without screens without issue. Better ways to unlock a bit more power, sure but it shouldnt hurt anything. I have done my car and severl others back when I had a MAF sensor and it didnt cause any issues at idle.

I Ditched my slp maf in favor of the stock one for tuning reasons. Anyways both were de screened and no problems here! Doubt it gained anything though.

Depends on how big the MAF is - if you are running a 100mm MAF with the card-style sensor, dirty airflow can be a big obstacle to having a stable tune. Stock sized...not nearly as much of an issue.

Fair enough, but I think we are talking about the stock size here. Thats my assumption as nobody mentioned a larger MAF.

If I'm not mistaken, when the original poster mentions the SLP MAF, he is referring to an 85mm MAF, so it is a little larger than stock.

I've read this over and over on various posts, must be true especially when people say it solves rough running conditions.

Yeah, the MAF is kinda important. I left mine alone too. I think it may be worth like .5 whp. Nothing spectacular and not worth it imo.

If you do some poking around on tuning forums (like HPTuners' forum), it is pretty well documented with data to back it up. I actually had to deal with flow straightening devices for my master's degree, and that honeycomb mesh on the MAF fits that bill quite nicely.
