Pulley problem? or worse?

Default Pulley problem? or worse?

I just looked at a friend's 97 C5 that recently slung a belt. The crank pulley is not lined up with the rest of the system... it's ~1/4" or more too far INWARD.

We didn't have any tools or time to check it out this morning, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas? He says the car is running fine. This car was bought used off of a car lot, so he doesn't know the history of the car.

Could someone have swapped on an f-body pulley? (are they different?) or is this a sign of something terribly wrong.

I assume that pulley is a two-piece unit with some sort of rubber isolator in between. Maybe the rubber has lost its bond and the outer hub has slipped back???? Maybe???

C5 and Fbody pullies are different.. but I believe the C5 is shorter.

i had measured the space from the timing cover to the
edge of the belt closest to the cover. 0.78"
(drivers side at crank midplane there is a quarter size circle on the timing chain cover, 0.78 from this flat surface to the belt edge)

Do Vette's have spring action tensioner pulleys like the F-bods? Could be that the tensioner needs replacing.

there are two belt tensioners on the c5.
one between the air compressor and pulley(pass. side of engine)
one tensioner high on pass. side for alt. power str. wtr pump.

We found the problem.... the rubber material between the inner and outer hub lost it's grip, and the outer pulley moved back towards the engine... actually slightly rubbing a notch into the timing cover.

Swapped on a new pulley and all is good now.
