Default Long Tube header help, stuck.

Im ***** deep in this header install, I have pacesetters that I stripped, primed and painted with header paint. Anyway I got the driver side manifold off and the y pipe off. My problem is the passenger side manifold. I could punch a hole in the window it's so frustrating. I have the first two manifold bolts off. I cant get the spark plug wires off the rear 3 plugs, let alone get the 4 rear manifold bolts off. How has everyone else got these off? It looks near impossible.

so the wires are one the plugs? should use some of that anti seize they sell for the boots (or who ever put them on last lol)

when i did mine, i grabed it by the boot and twisted the boot around the plug, this helped it break lose then i was able to pull the wire off the plug

Sometimes the wires get stuck and it is a real pain. If you are willing to risk replacing the wires if it goes wrong, get a set of vise grip pliers, clamp them on and use something to act as a pry bar. It is extreme but it should work. Then go to the auto store and by a new set of wires if you damage anything to bad. Also a thing of electric grease to prevent this from happening again.

As for the bolts, a small ratchet and deep sockets work, just very time consuming.

The last wire and bolts you can do easier from under the car.

Yeah the grease on the spark plugs are kinda dried up so theyre a little stuck I guess. I already have no patience so this is especially a pain in the ***. How long of a ratchet do you guys use, maybe the ratchets Im using just arent lon enough. And last, do you pull the metal part thats around the boot of the socket for the spark plug first or just pull the rubber part off.

had the same problem with my buddys camaro, but not with my T/A. Pulled the wires off, and only the boot came off. Had to get all new wires and plugs because of it. Patience is key with these header installs. You have to be patient with the passenger side as it is the hardest side to do. I got my headers installed on my trans am in about 9 hours, taking beer breaks and one for dinner. Having a nice set of tools helps as well

I have the last 3 manifold bolts to get off on the passenger side, the 3 rear bolts. Now for me to get the 1st of the last three bolts, the dipstick is in the way. I read that you have to unbolt it, but I can't see any bolt from underneath. Perhaps I read wrong Im going to go see if I can pull it out.

the bolt is not under the exhaust, it is above it. Like right above it. Just follow the dipstick up and you should find it.

Yeah got it off, my dad pulled on the dipstick and it broke off inside the block, about a quarter inch below the rib on the dipstick tube. Totally f***ed.

Matrix dude you have my luck when it comes to working on cars.... Did the dipstick end fall completely in the oil pan? Can you get some needle nose pliers and pull it out?

Man, I am sorry to hear that. For others reading this thread a trick I used to get the tube out was to get underneath the car with a pair of needle-nose vice grips and a rubber mallet. You should be able to clamp the grips on the tube at a 15-25 degree angle, then tap it with the mallet. You may need to unbolt the starter to gian some clearance, but it worked well.

Yeah it would have helped a lot if I had taken the starter off. Since the rib was still a good quarter inch above where it was broken off I could still put it in the block I just need to get it fixed sooner rather than later. THe broken piece is stuck in there good it's not going anywhere till I somehow pull it out. My uncle somehow got the spark plug boots off it was hell on earth he was bleeding all over my manifold it was bad. That was the worst part of the whole install. Both headers slid RIGHT in no problem, no grinding and I didn't take off the oil filter or starter. Broke a spark plug in half too, but that was an easy fix.

by far the easiest way to put headers on is drop the motor........ 120 bucks for a cherry picker and lift the car off...

Took us 5 hours to put headers on and changed all the plugs and wires.... much much easier....

but glad you got it done! good luck with the dipstick, might be a good time to upgrade plug wires!
