So in the last week I started getting a tick in the bottom. No this is not a rod nock so please don't infer that. I believe its happening at any rpms above idle but hard to tell with my exhaust. When I let off the throttle and it's goes towards idle it does it very loud. It's a quick tick tick tick stops for a few seconds then tick tick tick. I tightend up all exhaust but it just doesn't happen all the time but yes majority of the time. It almost sounds like a lifter tap but when you get on the ground you can tell it's underneath the engine. I rev it and get under the car as fast as possible but it goes away by the time I do. Someone said AC actuator?? Thanks for any and all help!!
X2 on the AC actuator. i heard that tick on some guy's LT1. at idle it ticks (like its related to the belt) when light throttle like very light it speeds up then it stops. OR just a random exhaust leak. it doesnt have to be gasket leak, could be collector leak. try to loose ac belt first and see from there. good luck.
By loosening the ac belt you mean have the car running and put a wrench on the tensioner and give it slack?
I have the mls gaskets if that makes a difference. And unfortunatly I didn't torque the header bolts I just tightened them down pretty damn tight. And I was told to use locktite so I don't think they backed out.
Will you explain to me the ac actuator?
i used MLS too and i didnt torque them either just tight them real good and retight them after several heat cycle. i dont know if its called actuator but is should be inside your compressor, i believe the actuator is the ac control unit? not sure tho. does the ticking go when you switch on ac or wt? i meant by removing AC belt is simply remove it so the compressor would stop spinning. if the ticking stops then its the compressor. any video clips?
Ok I'll check it out tonight. One of the wires was rubbing against the belt and broke so I have to repair it. The heat obviously works but the ac doesn't. It just happend a week ago so I'm gonna fix it by Xmas if I have time. I'll take the vid tonight. Can't upload it through my iPhone so I my need some help.
Just and idea, could be a plug wire also, i would wiggle all your plug wires with the engine runnin and see if it stops. Mine were on there but the contact at the end of the wire was not crimped all the way and made the spark jump.
unless you have your A/C on all the time i dont see how the compressor is going to tick unless the clutch went out on it.....as for a "A/C Actuator" im kind of confused..
I don't think it's the AC. I have that exact same Tick sound from under the car and my car does not have AC. I was thinking exhaust leak either from the header gaskets r from one of the clamps.
i have the same problem. mine has been doing this since i bought it, its from the underside of the engine, at idle when engine hot its loud (to me). i have been whoopin on the car and it has not got any louder since the 2 years ive owned it. i have been told LS1 engine is known for wrist pin slap?, when i free rev it to about 2,000RPM it starts real fast and then goes back to slow click noise. anything i should worry about?
i dont know if your A4 or M6 but if your A4 check your tq converter to flexplate bolts. when they loosen it sounds like a tick tick tick.... BOOM popcorn lol

Same here...I bought my car at the end of 2005 and 5.5 years and 50K miles later it has the same ticking sound, no better, no worse. I can't figure out if it's the exhaust manifolds/cats/y-pipe connections or if it is coming from the bottom of the engine. I keep my car very well maintained and have changed all fluids, filters, spark plugs, torque converter, y-pipe, cat-back, etc. over the years with no change in the ticking. The car drives great, I get the same gas mileage as I did when I bought the car and I pass CA smog no problem. I'm assuming or hoping it is not that big of a deal, maybe this summer I will have time to solve the mystery.
