Default Factory Ram-Air...Worth Anything?

As mentioned in my Flowmaster thread, I recently picked up a 1998 Trans Am. It has the Ram-Air hood and raised airbox as well.

Is this set-up decent? I had a 2000 Z28 with a SS hood and that system was terrible. Would I be better served by a Volant or an underneath system?

Just looking for ideas...this car will be a driver with a few track passes. Thanks!

They all have proven results. The kit for the raised WS6 box was the Brian Green Ram Air(BGRA) I believe Fast Toys sells a version of it called the JAAM. Other kits that work are the SSRA/FTRA.

I believe the hoods are functional "BUT NOT A WHOLE LOT"
I say you should get yourself a CAI kit. I have a SSRA and heres my thread from a couple months ago with the proof CAI kits work.

OK, I had the FTRA on my Z28 with a lid and was very happy with it...even supporting ~650rwhp. The BG kit looks cool, though, and I like the idea of actually using the "nostrils" on the hood. Thanks for all the input so far and please keep it coming!

I have a BGRA on my WS6 which helps to channel more air directly into the intake faster and smoother. If the baffles are still in the hood it's doing you no good. I think the Volant is a good piece.

The main problem with ramair kits are water. With a CAI from underneath there's been people that hit a puddle and sucked water right into the engine. For me I have to worry about driving in the rain without the blocker in.

The Volant looks great and, in conjunction with opening the nostrils, seems like it would work well. Thanks for the input, folks!

X2 BlueKnight. When I did that I felt a sop difference. not a lot but enough.... that was going from a non-ram air hood (sleek beak) to a debaffled ram air hood (oem).

+1. That's going to get you as much as any of the kits on the market - a straight shot of cold air to your intake; in other words, lower IATs.

The water problem is still there though. Nothing to stop the rain from going straight into the motor, unless you consider your filter waterproofing.

Same for me, I've driven through a rain storm, it's fine. If you were that **** about it you could make little inserts you could snap into the nostrils when it rained to block rain.

I made my own raised box by cutting the regular z28/ T/A box on the front (enlarged the existing holes) (i'm not talking about the fra). I about doubled the size of the air intake hole and felt a big difference right there.

Anyone with a raised box that can measure the height of their lower lid opening? My fabricated one is 2" high about 90% of the way accross.
