Default Opinions on underdrive pulleys

10% or 25% underdrive for my lq9 build. It will be a DD and running A/C is a must. What brands you like etc.

If you get a 25%, I'd recommend an alt pulley also, or you may have charging issues. I have an ATI Superdamper (10%) it's pricey, but a quality pulley. The increments on it are cool also for hand spinning each cylinder to TDC, etc.

ASP is a good pulley as well. Make sure it's got the SFI rating also. Some low quality pulleys can mess with your car in ways that I REALLY can't remember right now.

From my understanding the 10% is a waste of time. I will either do a 25% UD or leave it stock.

^ 10% is good for an Auto car without doing other pulleys to compensate for the Alt spinning slower. With 25% on an auto, it needs an alt overdrive pulley to compensate.

thanks for the info guys, I'll look into some pulleys. I'm leaning towards 25% but just wanted to see who's running 10% and the real difference. Motor will be mated with a t56. Also where would be a good place to pick up the balancer and alt pulley? Lq9 set up is basically the same as ls1 correct?

I am in the same place, SLP has a 25% UD at Jegs for $300 but no alt pulley. March has a crank/alt pulley for around the same, I think I will go with them as they are known for their drives among others.

Check Ebay, ATI sells blems for $200 directly from them. That is where I picked mine up, but you have to have patience!

If you're on a manual trans, you shouldn't need the ALT overdrive pulley. That's for autos because they idle a little lower. IIRC.

I run a 25% ud PowerBond and have done for the last 5 yrs with no issues.

I believe the ATI is the better pulley to use due to better harmonics though.

That's interesting, is there that much difference in idle? I was also wondering by using the alt pulley or not would affect the load on the drive (ie: more or less free HP) or is that dependent on the voltage reg and charging rate? Also, would not having an alt pulley drag the alternator down when idleing under load from a/c, e-fans, blower motor, power accessories?

SLP UD pulleys are just powerbond's re-stamped and sold for an additional 100 dollars. Just run a powerbond.

I have been running the Ebay 25% UD pulley for a couple years now, car makes good power, has seen almost 7k rpms multiple times, never any problems. dont remember who makes it though.

Normally this would be the case but with an ati it is actually on of the only true dampeners that exceeds oem specs and has shown that it will dyno the same or sometimes more that its 25% economic counter parts i too got mine from ebay as a blem item.

Been running an ASP since 2002, old style before they got an SFI rating, never had a problem.
