Default Different header question?

I was talking with a mechanic friend who has several muscle cars about (440 super bee, 69 Vett) putting headers on my SS. He said that they will cause problems, i.e. Starter burning out, plug wires.

My question is this--

People who drive their cars daily (10K or more a year) have you had problems caused by your headers? Specifically with the starter?

If this were the case, why haven't you seen threads left and right about this subject on message boards like this one? There's plenty of daily driven LS1s with tons of miles on them without those problems.

Obviously your friend doesn't know LS1s too well, like most people out there.

They sometimes caused those problems on the old school cars. Not so on these newer cars.

Basically, these old school guys are ignorant to any vehicle manufactured after, oh, let's say 73. I run into this all the time at the parts store I work at. Ignorance is bliss though... I love suprising these guys at the track with my little 346

Yep, I see that too... there's the old grizzled guy who doesn't know anything about cars if they have anything resembling computers and fuel injection, and then there's the young punks working right next to them that think a K&N, aluminum wing, and an exhaust by Folgerz Coffeez Canz is the end all be all of performance.

Does any one who has replied have headers on their car?

I thought it was an older car issue, but just wanted to check.

I was looking for a reply like " I've had my xbrand headers for 2 years with no problens"

I'm 48 so I'm old school enough where I've owned cars that headers were a PITA on. The older headers didn't have as thick a flange on them so they would warp. We used paper gaskets that would burn out. Starter motors were bigger so they were closer to the headers and would get hot. I have headers on both of my LS1 cars and don't have any of these problems.

Thanks, yours was the most helpful post so far. How many miles do you put on your car a year? How long have you had the headers? What type of headers do you have?

I'm 35 and have had 2 cars with headers in the past and problems as well. 86 Iroc, 77 T/A.

My 2000 has JBA shorties on it. It is not driven much and for that particular car, they are exactly what I want on it. They are basically a direct replacement for a stock exhaust manifold utilizing all the other stock exhaust components.
My 1999 had Hooker L/Ts and an ORY for over a year and around 6K miles. They were trouble free. It currently has FLP L/Ts on it because I wanted to run cats to cut down on the drone you get running an ORY and the FLPs allow me to switch between cats and race pipes easily for running at the track. They have been on the car for around 6 months and 2K miles with no problems. Fitment was excellent with both the Hookers and FLPs. Just use the stock steel GM exhaust gaskets and torque the header bolts to 18 ft lbs and you will not have any of the problems associated with header leaks at the heads.
I have also installed Hookers, FLPs, MAC's and Pacesetters on many other local Fbody cars and of those, the only problems were with the Pacesetters. Many do not have problems with those, but I had to do a lot of grinding on the Kmember and denting of the header tubes to get them to fit on the car I installed them on. Generally the only problems you will hear about with headers on these cars is the different fitment problems. It is usually the lower cost headers that have most of those problems. As with anything man made and different manufacturing tolerences from car to car, fitment is always going to be a crap shoot.

Chef-

I have two quotes on Kooks & install. I will call Eastside before I make a decision.

I would like to find someone with a car with headers and a cat-back that I can go for a ride in and see how I like the noise. I'm also worried that headers will make my car too loud.

I have heard DaBigJC's car, but he has a loudmouth and LT's with no cats. That is way too loud for me.

My car has a magnaflow cat back now.

That's the setup I have had for over a year and a half with no problems. I put around 10 thousand miles per year on it.
