I was joking of course but IMO and i've been doing this a LONGGGGG time I wooood drill it carefully using whell bearing grease. I've done this kind of thing MANY MANY times over the years without any trouble. Oh and i wanna warn you the 89 inch lbs those bolts are suposed to be tightened to is pushing it. I'd stay in the 60 inch lb range if you don't want to goes through this again.

Ok I came up with a safe fix. Use a air compressor to pressurize the crankcase and drill away. The air pressure will blow the ALL the chips out the hole as you drill. I've done spark plug holes this way.

Those shavings go straight into the lifter tray, do as you wish but if you take the easy way out you may be back here later due to lifter issues. They will not make it to the oil pan unless you drilled your lifter trays.

How could ANYTHING get into the lifters? I need a clear explaination because ITS IMPOSSIBLE! The ONLY way anything is getting into those lifters is through the oiling system and that meands getting past the oil screen and oil filter and THATS IMPOSSIBLE! You realize when the engine is running the oil pressure is POSITIVE and everything is getting washed with oil. The only place anything is going is into the pan.

i wouldnt be asking for any tech advice from that source, joking or otherwise, and whenever metal shavings in your oil is a minor consequence of a repair then something is seriously wrong...and if the metal shavings did just end up in the lifter tray what about the hole in the bottom? there is some clearance between the pushrod im thinkin?

No, there is no clearance to pass metal shavings. Oil will seep by but not shavings. Don't forget the lifter tray has no drainage hole at the bottom and it is the tight fit of the lifter in the tray that holds the lifter up during a cam swap. So oil will seep by over time, but metal shavings will tend to sit on top of the lifter plunger where the snap ring is and pushrod is in contact.

Perhaps you should pull a set of heads and check it out. Where do you think the chips are going to go? The lifter tray is closed at the bottom, chips fall in tray, chips sit on lifter/pushrod and get pushed around with lifter motion. Can't make it simpler then that, but if you need a photo because you are unfamliar with the LS1 lifter setup, that can be arranged.

Also, I am not the one who is telling the OP it is OK to dump metal chips in his motor. That may be something you might do, but to recommend it to others is irresponsible.

You are going to have to pull the Head, the Intake bolt holes are directly above
Push rods, meaning the shavings will fall onto the Lifters.

Yeah after all the research I've done I found that out I just thought maybe trance565 found a different way and I also know helicoil won't work because u have to snap that little piece off at the bottom, but I was thinkin maybe a timesert? I really didn't want to take the head off but it is the safest and the best way to fix the problem.
