Default Is it time for a ported tb or not

check sig....... Im about to add a set of A.R.E. stg 2 heads in about a month, im wondering if its about time to get a ported tb (i can get Jantzer ported tb from a friend for $70- thats why im wondering) But i also heard that ported tb's give "tuners" headaches, and that stock tb's are good on 9 and 10 sec cars

The aftermarket MAFs are what cause problems for tuners. Instead of reading incoming O2 accurately, they are actually lying to the PCM in order to lean out the mixture. Bigger displacement and FI engines need a bigger base throttle body platform because of the increased volumetric efficiency. Yeah the stock throttle body is fine for NA stock cube motors. However, these NA 346ci motors can use the increased intake and flow characteristics provided by a ported/polished stock tb. Plus you are def gonna want as much flow as possible so as not to choke the new heads.

(this question sounds NooBish- but its not!)

So it's safe to say i SHOULD see some gains with the ported tb, when i put the heads on? (in other words with my set up would you spend $70 on a ported tb?)

Yes and hell yes. Since you are using heads that have a greater flow, you will see even more gains than on stock heads.

I noticed an increase when I went from the stock TB to a BBK 80 mm (not really worth the extra money over a ported unit) on a basic bolt on (not even headers) car.

Port it yourself for $5 and be done with it. You can remove the material with a dremel, and fill the holes with aluminum epoxy. It is easy and fun!

Here is how mine came out:

Well I don't know about 10rwhp on a car without heads or at least a cam, but at the very least it will pick up some power and improve throttle response.

For as cheap as you are getting it, I beleive it is a no brainer. Especially on a H/C car. Every little bit helps.

It's usually worth 7-10rwhp on a heads/cam car, and 3-5rwhp on a bolt on car.
