There are a lot of threads about MAFs. I think the stocker is good to like 500hp. People do pop the screens out, but I don't recommend it if you have a lid. I have heard a lot of stories about grass, bugs, etc being stuck on the screen. I don't think its a big of enough gain for me to take the risk.
Everybody has a different opinion though.

Do not remove the screen. The screen's purpose is to even out airflow over the sensor, giving the sensor a more quality signal. I actually replaced the screen with a better one. It's flows more air, and actually straightens air better due to it being deeper. The thickness of the stock screen is maybe 1-2mm, this one is probably 2cm. Look at the mounting depth inside the MAF. Screen only costs $10 too.

Ditto. Some like to argue how they saw a 2mpg increase in fuel mileage, but I wonder how the PCM sees the airflow without the screen now. It's to even out the airflow over the MAF sensing units. Without it may create a turbulent and "tumbling" airflow. It's more of a "flow straightener."

before i replaced my lid i had MAF problems and upon inspection found quite a bit of crud on the screen. i personally would not want that stuff being burned in my engine but i doubt it would really have hurt anything. i would recommend reading old threads here about oversized MAF's

My internet sarcasm fails.....
Seriously though, I checked with Frost before and he said removing the screen is not a problem. He did say never port a MAF housing.
Also, if anyone is getting bugs and pieces of grass on their screens, then just imagine how much dust, dirt, and sand you are ingesting into your engine. The screen is not there to filter anything, if that big crap is getting past your air filter then you have some serious problems.

I've been running without a screen a few years now with no problems. I don't think it really matters either way as long as your filter is doing its job. The only reason for me is that I swapped my stocker for an aftermarket with someone that was going back to original on their ride.

I have been running my car without the screen and I even ported the housing ends to the max which was around 85mm. Like the other guy said, if you are getting stuff stuck to your screen you have a major problem. Thats why you have an AIR FILTER!!!

I actually don't buy the whole 'air straightening' thing haha, really think about what you guys are saying....air is NOT straight anyways. The MAF will still read it!
Guy on here did a comparo with and without the screen and gained like 1 car length in a race from 20-100, I think it was BlueKnight (who did the awesome LS6 intake install vid).
