Question Question about removing knock sensors from cover.

So I've got my intake pulled off and the knock sensors unplugged. My knock sensor holes are completely filled with water. I've soaked it up with a rag as much as possible but I can't get it all out. If I just unscrew the knock sensor, will all the water dump into my engine or is the hole not open through the valley cover? I tried searching, but, this really was never a question on here. Thanks for any advice guys.

Yeah it will fall down into the valley and can get into your oil and everything. I'd suggest a shopvac or something.. also if you are replacing both sensors I recommend a new wiring harness for it. Will come with new seals too

Yeah, I bought two new sensors and the harness from WS6store. Thanks for the answer. Guess I'll spend more time cleaning it up. Thanks again.

pretty sure the valley cover seals around the boss for the knock sensors if memory is correct. so the sensors can come out and then the cleaning can be finished.

I just thought of this. Just remove the whole valley cover and dump the water out outside of the motor.. I just looked up a pic of the valley cover and when the sensor is removed there is an open hole

If I do that do I have to retorque the valley cover? Also, do the knock sensors get torqued or just tighten them up. They didn't seem as if though they were very tight when I broke them loose.

I'm sure there's a torque rating but it really doesn't matter. I just made both sensors and cover bolts just snug. Your call though.

Thats all I was planning on doing. I've never really used a torque wrench unless I was installing heads or something extremey important. After looking at the valley cover, the only way to get it out is to remove the coolant line that runs back and forth across the cover. I can only assume that those fitting have small O rings on them. I don't think I'm going to risk damaging them. I've got the ks holes cleaned up good enough for me. They aren't perfect but hell, nothing is on this car after the orignal owner abused it for 110k miles. I've put 2k miles on it and have replaced almost 2k worth in parts and it still needs a new clutch.

HoLLo, LRAFB huh? I lived in Cabot, about 10 miles north east of there for 25 years. Wish I could go back but the Army wanted me here in WA.

Don't take the sensors out until the water is out of the well, otherwise yes it will drain into the engine.

I got as much of the water out as I could. I pulled the sensor out and the water was just standing in the hole. None of it drainned into the engine. Are you guys sure?

Pull the knock sensors and vacuum out the remaining water. There are rubber gaskets in the cover that seal against the boss in the valley to prevent water from entering the engine.

Well your response began with "pretty sure", and "if memory serves me correct". Others posted with very straight forward and confident answers that also agreed with your post. What's the issue?

Like was said, i know for a fact the cover seals to the boss in the block, and not to the sensor itself. I just assembled 1 engine, and swapped a LS6 cover on to another.

Yeah, I removed the sensors and soaked up all the water. Then I removed the cover and cleaned them up really well. Also gave me a reason to check out the condition of the internal engine for signs of sludge or anything.

It wouldn't be bad idea to put some RTV on the seals when you reinstall. Reinstall the gasket, then smear RTV over the gap between the outer edge of the seal and the valley cover. No problems with water.

its better to make the silicone dam around the holes than to have the KS covers stuck to the VC when you need to remove them......ask me how i know

I've had no problem just taking a pick and peeling the rtv away from the eges of the gaskets to get them out. Done it many times.
