Default Water Pump, 160 degree Thermostat?

Hi, I have a 1999 Pontiac Trans Am LS1 with a full dual exhaust and unknown cam along with SLP Intake. My stock water pump has just began leaking and is due to be changed. The T/A runs at 210 degrees water temperature. My question is would it be worth to drop down to a cooler thermostat to reduce water temperature? I do not drive the car in the winter so to have warm water temperature for heat is of no concern to me. Thanks for the input.

the 160 degree thermostat won't do much with the fans programmed to turn on at the same temperatures.

(TheSilverOne) Is it possible to program the fans to kick on at a lower temperature? Would that bring up the problem of burning up the electric fan motors?

I had an issue with my 98 running hot all of a sudden, around 200. I replaced my thermostat and everything went back to normal around 185. No need to start messing with different thermostate and changing fan start settings. Keep it simple if it aint broke don't fix it.

Thanks (LS1121) I think i will just replace my water pump and since i will have it off, i will replace my thermostat with the current one in it, and keep running at 210 degrees.

I would get 160 degree t stat. I just bought one. I noticed after I let my car cool of at the track I always trap higher. So Figured if I get a 160 degree stat it will run better.

If you consider $50 bux cheap. A '99 model being a one-piece t'stat & housing...

OP, just shim the one you have to operate at a lower temp. There are prolly some threads here about doing this. I have mine shimmed to operate at 175°.

Ya know what, my opinion only but......if you go thru all the trouble to replace a water pump because you are having an over heating problem and don't change the Thermostat at the same time......that is just Stupid!!! and you deserve what you get. Did you ever think that maybe just maybe a stuck thermostat creating excess pressure might have leadto the demise of the water pump. All I know is that MY car is back to running at about 185 you can do whatever you want.

Wow, this is a really helpful post! There is absolutely nothing in the OP's thread to indicate a bad t'stat, he only wants a lower operating temp. Speaking of STUPID, my opinion is, it's pretty stupid to buy a new part when it's not necessary...
