Default Best bang for buck

I have a 1999 SS 6-speed with 100K. My only mods are a lid and free ram air. I am looking to spend about $1000.00 on my car before spring. I need to have it tuned as I replaced the axle with 3:73's last fall and need the speedo corrected. I can have it tuned/dynoed locally for about $500. With the leftover I am planning on the traction control reverse module and considering a 180 thermostat and either a LS6 intake or a hooker catback. Obviously I will do the mods before tuning. If I do the exhaust I may also consider a y-pipe and eliminating the cats.

Is it worth doing the thermostat?

Will I see a decent gain over the SS exhaust with the hooker catback?

Between the exhaust and intake, which will give me more perfomance?

Thanks for your help!!

Some of what i did
Mac headers ORY 220
Hypertech 125
Used cam 200
Comp 918's 150
Used LM/Hooker 200
Still have some left. With tires you could hit 11's

Don't bother with the y-pipe, you'll only gain minimally with the stock manifolds. Spend the money on headers + ORY + exhaust. You will gain an honest 30 hp if not more with the tuning. If you can install yourself you can sneak it in at close to $1,000 with jethot headers & a hooker catback.

Headers are the biggest hp producing "bolt on".

#1 thing if you don't have it..... LS1Edit

Get some long tube headers (Hookers are really nice ) and true duals out the back. There is nothing better !

A T-stat is cheap so its a do whenever mod.

I would wait to do the LS6 intake manifold when you got for a head/cam swap. Till then you probubly won't see a while lot of HP gain.

500 is too much just to correct the speedo error.

Headers do seem to be the best bang for the buck, especially for the first mod. No cats might sound raspy and be loud. I would do LTs and custom True duals, which would be about $1k. Then save for tuning after that and you will be 20+ rwhp better. Tuning for that should be closer to $300 I would imagine.
