Question ASP Pulley, New Stock Bolt, Threadlock?

I got my car all put back together. I installed a new cam, EWP and a ASP pulley.

When I put the new stock bolt in for the pulley, I didn't put lock tight on it.

I'm guessing I F'd up. Do you really need the lock tight? I torqued the bolt to spec.

Put 7 miles on the car since I got it running.

What do you guys think? Buy a new bolt, take old bolt out, install new bolt with lock tight or take a chance with the bolt that's in there?

Bill

I installed a new GM stock bolt and torqued to spec.

There wasn't anything on the threads, just the orange stuff by the head of the bolt...

Your right, I just went out to the garage and check a new bolt I had and it just has the orange lube around the head. I went with the ARP bolt with mine and all you use is their lube on the threads and under the head of the bolt.

DO NOT USE LOCKTITE ON THE BOLT!!! Trust me. I did and when I had to remove the bolt, 2' breaker bar with a 4' pipe on the end and I barely got the bolt loose.

The orange stuff on the head looks like thread locker, they just applied it in a different manner. Needless to say, when I reinstalled my pulley, the new bolt when in as is.

You are supposed to torque the ASP on with the old bolt to specs, then put the new bolt on and torque it down. This will keep the new bolt from stretching which is not an issue with the ARP bolt. Someone on this board did what you described and lost his ASP pulley while the engine was spinning at about 5 grand. He never did find the pulley just the old bolt he used and lots of other stuff all over the place. I used Loctite when I installed my ASP and Rollmaster. Remember these pulleys have no keyways so they will spin off. Good Luck!

LOL.. that was probably me. I've used a little bit of locktite on my crank bolt ever since then. I've had the pulley off for cam swaps 3 or 4 times since then and never have had a problem getting the bolt loose. The secret to it is to drive the car for 15 or 20 mins and let the crank and bolt get good and hot, the locktite will release easier when it is at a high temperature.

I wouldn't recomend using locktite either, it's not needed. I've done a ton of pulley installs with out that bolt backing out in the slightest. The orange stuff on the head of the bolt is there for a reason, and if installed right, it will NOT back out..

you need to torque down the pulley with the old bolt as specified in an earlier post. The reason is that when you put the new bolt on, the orange stuff is the locktite. If you stretch and tear it, then you just ruined the locktite.
Also, mine is only torqued to about 190ft lbs and never had a problem. Spec is 240!!!!!
