Go with 00 and up manifolds. Shorties are a waste unless they cost next to nothing. Anything else as in mids and longtubes will make the car illegal

A little. Almost as good as shorty's. However, short tubes are a waste, and honestly, so are newer manifoldp. You won't see any gains worth the time you spend.

Yea, your only option is to go with shorty headers. Unless you can find them used for super cheap, the amount of $$ you will spend on them won't be worth the gains.

Yup, CA laws totally suck the hatchi....
You change the exhaust system, you are toast.
The best thing you can do is make friends with some guys who do smog stuff and send em a bottle or 6 pack when it gets close to smog time.

Get a lid, cutout/e-cutout and a nice catback. Getting shorties is your only option of staying legal and not having to pay to pass smog. Not worth the money, at all.

On the 99 the double walled pipe on the passenger side between the cat and the manifold that's your biggest/worst restriction on the stock exhaust. Replace that with some single wall SS tubing, and a better merger on the Y-pipe would help some to. I'd replace the ls1 intake with a SLP LS6 w/egr , port and/or mill the stock heads or if you can afford it get some AFR 205's or 210's, I also get a small cam with at least -4* valve overlap. A good example is a 224/224 114lsa.

Even shorty headers are a issue unless they're CARB certified.

Yea I know. I almost bought some shorty's from a guy on here that had a CARB EO#, but I don't remember who the manufacturer was. My statement was assuming that he'd buy CARB certified shortys.

The only CARB EO'd shorties I see are JBA (in steel or stainless, uncoated or coated)... and they cost arm/leg.

What do you do with the EGR pipe if you go with an 01-02 exhaust manifold?

FYI, If your car came with EGR, you wont pass the visual inspection without it.
