From my experience on my old '69 Z28 you can just start the car with the hood open and nail the gas a few good times. If the mounts are good there should be minimal movement. I had one separate on my '69 and it was very noticable. It looked like the motor was trying to jump out of the engine bay or try to roll onto its side. You could also here it cluck when it moved. Hope this helps.

My shifter moves around a little bit when I start the car...could this mean that I need new motor mounts?

My old car had mounts so worn, you could move the engine a good ways BY HAND. replaced them and there was little to no movement.

A little bit of movement could be considered normal ... depending on your definition of "little"....

If you have a broken engine mount, it is very noticable. Just do what the other people said, open the hood, grab the throttle linkage on the throttle body, slam it some gas, and watch the engine. If the engine looks as though it is moving an absurd amount (or even trying to jump out of the car), check your mounts.

They move quite a bit at idle, even stock. Yours looks fine, especially since it appears to be cammed. Put in a poly mount or two if you don't want it to jiggle like that.
