I got a 230's cam, a set of 243 casting heads and 660" TEA springs that I could let go for $1000 + shipping.

Stock converter is worse than the stock cam.

Converter bolt on cars can see low 12s/ high 11s, a cam/bolt on car will be doing good to get mid 12s and you will hate your life driving the car because it will try to push through the brakes at every stop.

Frost or Bluecat are both good tuners. I know Frost does mail order tunes, just search the username "Frost" on here.

"starters" are often a waste of money.
Spend the $700 & get a Yank SS3600 converter.
Frost mail-order tunes are $150, I think. Why are you against a dyno tune? It's not too much more and much more worth it, IMO.
Find a slightly used electric cut-out on here for $150 shipped, new only 200 or so complete.

Those will be your best bang for buck, and the best "starters" you can do if you actually want to see a real difference in performance, and not just **** money away for 5 horsepower and nearly no ET change.

fti 3600 stall, granatelli lid, jegs 3" cut out, and a dyno tune by frost (i live close enough to his shop) Should be around $1000, do you think it can compete with the car in my signature?

+1 vote for FROST tune.
I have a good condition SLP lid if you're looking. Nice tight fit on the lid base.
