Default Help! I broke something, but what the hell is it?

Granted, if I'm asking that question, I probably have no business working on it, but I did, so...

What is this?
Can I fix it?
How?

To give you an idea of where/what it is, that is the valve cover on the right (painted, albeit it poorly, black). The exhaust manifolds are off and that piece sits next to the firewall.

you can use that aluminum tape that we use on A/C systems in Houses. it is pretty strong, and is water proof. so tape away, but it is aluminum, so just sand it down on the roll, then throw some black on it after you patch it. i concur about it being the AC box, maybe you picked up a stick or a big rock some how.

What is the purpose of the box itself. I.e. does it hold fluids, or prevent damage to the heater core? I'm just trying to figure out how aggressive to go with the sealing process. Obviously if it holds fluid, I need it to bu 100% tight. On the other hand, if it is a protective box, then a 98% hold might not be a problem.

Any ideas?

Its just a box....it has air movement through it so just seal it up with aluminum tape and paint it black
