Custom MAF?

Custom MAF?
Question for the masses here:
After doing a lot of reading about the 100mm MAF's having issues even after running a screen (not all, just some) I had an idea. It's my understanding the issues stem from a lack of velocity over the new card style MAF.
So, here's my thought- Utilizing the material below, I would make my own 3.5" diameter (85mm ID) MAF, vice the 4" MAF (LPE / TSP 100mm) in hopes of not only gaining better unrestricted airflow, but also trying to help velocity for better readings.
I thought about the GM 85mm MAF, but there's still a lot of "stuff" on the inside creating turbulence. Well, that, and it's something I can make and call my own. I will also be adding a SAXON PC MAF Screen to straighten airflow.
I'm thinking it should be easier to tune, and give a better benefit to having a true 85mm MAF.
What do you guys think?

Not so much for the OP but to others who like the idea, retuning the AFGS is going to be time consuming understand that first.
I have known others to make their own MAFs it can work well if you put the time in to get it retuned. Believe one tuner made an oval one to match the LT1 TB. If someone can do that your project should be easier especially the tweaking the tuning part.

Thanks for info, brother. Yeah, I figured the tuning was going to be time consuming, as well as the clocking to try get the best reading.
Geoff will be tuning the car though, so hopefully I'm covered.
I figured somewhere out there someone had done this, just never ran across a thread. Figured I'd thow it up here for others that might have had the same idea.

At a car show thanksgiving 2010, I saw spectre advertising an upcoming kit for spacesaving purposes (approx 200 plus) that included the alum mounting plate, Ls7 maf(I assume?) & wiring adapter. Said tuning was necessary. Curious what tuners would have to say about this mod.

Alrighty. It's done. Ordered my 3.5" aluminum tube, and MAF # 15865791
I'm guessing I need a pigtail now....
Guys, would you suggest using the IAT built into the card LS3/7 MAF, or continue to use my regualar IAT sensor?

I guess I'm going to keep the MAF in the neck of the lid for the time being. We'll see how that goes. I'm fairly certain I do NOT want it in the MAF. If I ever do relocate it It's going to be going in the ram air chute.
Parts are all ordered.... should have it together late this week.

I remember seeing threads on that Jim, and thanks for posting. #1 reason I never descreened my MAF, but opted for the bigger Saxon screen.
It's the "black magic" GM discovered I'm trying to figure out. The Cobalt has been using these MAF's since 2005, and the new Camaro's & vettes have followed suit. They get good readings somehow, and I'm thinking an 85mm tube, or an 82mm ID should help tremendously with air velocity and accurate readings.
I still plan to screen it though with an 85mm version from Saxon.

I,m thinkin the (card) type of maf units are a whole different type of setup as far as how they read ,sensitivity ,etc. I,d probably go for the one with the IAT included.

Well, the 85mm aluminum tube and the card MAF came in today. All I'm waiting for is the bung from Summit.
Initial measurements look promising though. Seems the actual portion of the card that reads the airflow will be perfectly centered. May alleviate the issue of "clocking" the MAF that you have to do with the other 100mm units, since they are off a bit to one side.
Pics to come shortly today.

Yes. It's all together. I just need to get the bung welded when I get home. The portion of the card that actually reads the airflow is perfectly centered in the middle of the tube, so I see this being fairly accurate.
I'll be sure to post pics when I get in (this week) and let you guys know.
