Default Breaking a 10 bolt

What actually breaks when people talk about their 10 bolts breaking easily?

What is the weak point in the rear end?

Is it bearing spins in the housing, the housing, axles breaking, what?

The whole rear end is weak. I have read in the past that the teeth on the ring gear can break, the bearing caps, the housing and even the axle tubes.

if you have the money upgrade thats as simple as it gets. the ring gear blows up, the posi blows up and the axles break.... it all is weak. even on stock power. but with everything some might last some might not it.

It all depends on how hard you drive your car, if you have an A4 it can last for quite a while

Also depends on the stickiness of your tires of course. My bet is always spiders or ring gear because that's all I've personally seen...unless the car has 3 wheels.

Mainly the gear and pinion are just too small. But as an A4 on the street I wouldnt bother upgrading to a 12 bolt or 9 inch, they just dont get that strained unless you are running a radical setup.

street tires wheel hoppin, on stock power 160kmi last year i shredded my torsen gears. then this year i broke my left axel at the splines with a full exhaust.

but that axel got heated up to brake it free from the spide gear when i ruined the torsen.

wheel hop gone this year.i hope mine makes it through this year. its not likely.on street tires

Great information, thanks guys. I guess I have some decision making to do. Basically there is some noise I can hear coming from my rear end. Not bad, but some. So I was wanting to replace all the bearings, then I have 3.73 gears and forged axles. The shop wants $320 for labor to put it together. That doesn't include gears/axles/bearings/shims cost. What a money pit if its just gonna blow.

Most guys don't break them on the street, the 10-bolt dies at the track. I blew one to pieces at SAR, ring and carrier came apart in 4 different pieces! The announcer was a real dick too and couldn't resist a few laughs at my expense...

lol thats unfortunate. The thing about it is that I plan on taking my car to the track to see what progress has been made since I first got the car.

There are ways you can make it less likely to break the rear end but as mentioned above its just weak from the get go. If your an A4 you shouldnt have to worry much its the M6 guys that usually run into rear end issues. Like i said there are ways to make it a bit stronger if need be.

Drive it till it blows up and replace with 12 bolt, S60 or 9"...Don't spend any money on trying bullet proof a 10-bolt=waste of money.

I pushing ~450rwhp on Nitto 315 DR's for a year now and it's still holding. I don't go to the track though, just the occasional stop light race. Hopefully It'll last for at least another year.
