Default LM1 to non-bullet muffler?

My old Z28 has LM1 with dummy cats and long tubes on it. I sold it to my buddy and he really doesn't like all the rasp. I know many of you guys swap out the LM resonator for other bullet-type mufflers, but has anyone ever swapped out the resonator for a chambered muffler, like say a 40 series flowmaster or something? ( and kept it coming out the back like the regular LM setup) Is a bullet style muffler the only kind that will fit in that location?
Thanks

I dnt think u can fit a 40 series down there. Or any chamber muffler like that... I here good things about the XR-1 muffler... Less rasp.
