belt squeal
hello,
I know there are lots of posts here about belt squeal. I replaced mine with the gatorback one and it went away for about a week. had the car street tuned, not the squeal is back.
I have replaced the water pump, thinking it was the pump.
My squeal is pretty loud. Ill try to get a video of it and see what the people here think.

Find your leak, repair the part or replace it, new belt.... Problem fixed.

If the squeal went away with the soap it isn't a pulley or tensioner... Since it went away then came back when you swapped belts that means anti freeze is leaking on your belt somewhere, mostly likely a small amount since it took a week to arise again.

thanks for trying though.

I had a belt squeal problem as well just a short time ago. I replaced my belts with the AC Delco stuff and the sound came back (not as pronounced as before however) in a month or two. I went to the Gatorbacks by Goodyear and has been dead silent ever since. Are you double sure your power steering isn't leaking or.anything like that? Also, do you remember spilling any fluids on or near the belts after you replaced them with the Gatorbacks? Even something no brainer such as cleaning off the engine with a cleaner solution can cause loud belts. Good luck.

only think close to a fluid on the belt could be sweat.

Something as simple as a bad o ring or gasket could be the culprit.
It is definitely the first and most common reason you would have belt squeal leave and come back after a new belt.
If not that, what else would cause it?

which suggestion? The belt? I have five new belts. three from autozone, one gates and one gatorback. all give me the same squeal.
I have no loss of anti-freeze.

just a very tiny leak from the water pump weep hole could do it.are the pulleys clean and dry ?check the power steering for fluid level.how many miles on the engine ?saw a thread about pulleys being a little bit out of alignment.how big or alternator do you have ?

well I think I may have it. The power steering pulley is off by 1/2 of a groove with the laser guide. not much at all. cant really be anything I can see.
When I tried to move the pulley in more, it bottomed out on the power steering pump housing. It still was the same 1/2 of a groove off. I ordered a new one. You could see on the back of the pulley that the paint was worn off, so I know it was bottomed out.
Any other reasons why the pulley would not go on far enough? Bracket is solid, there is a plate on the front side that cant really go anywhere else. No spacer between bracket and head.
If the new pulley does not go in far enough, I will be replacing the pump.

With the belts off, spray all the pulleys with brake cleaner a few times and let them dry. Then either get a new belt or put on a used belt that you are 100% sure does not have any fluid contamination. If there was any residue on any of the pulleys before, then the belt is contaminated and is likely trash.
Assuming there are no fluid leaks (or they have been fixed already) this method has worked for me every time.
Good luck with solving the issue.
