Just to throw a wrench into this discussion, I always thought they were interchangeable. But when I look at pictures of my 383 with patriot heads out of the car, the rear of the heads have an indented circle while the front have patriot engraved. Is that unique to patriot? I have some 799s sitting at home that I'll check when I get back...

I don't understand the issue. The heads should be identical, they do not make two different heads for one side or the other. There maybe a rare instance in the history of the combustion engine that requires two different heads but I haven't seen it in my life time. It doesn't matter what side they came off or what side you put them on. You just have to set them up for what external hardware it needs, (sensors, etc). The only thing that would be side specific would be the valve covers, thats if you are using the factory hose routing. If you are doing a custom set up on your hose routing, it's what ever works best for your set up. Sometimes depending on what you are doing, the valve covers do not have to be side specific either.

Patriot does that for aesthetics. You can switch them around and it wouldn't matter. But of course then the circles would be up front and the Patriot etching would be in the back.

You've never seen an OHC engine? Most OHC engines the cylinder heads are side specific. On properly engineered engines like the LS1, they are identical.

That's what they do in Nascar because they are always turning left.

I wasn't concidering OHC heads. The question was concerning OHV heads. But it doesn't hurt to expand on the topic. A little Edumacation will help them that do not know.
