Default Budget catch can?

Had the intake off yesterday to replace a knock sensor and there is a lot more oil in the heads and intake than I would like. Stock ls1 type PCV system, I'm going to replace the valve to see if it helps a little since it's never been changed and the motor has over 100k miles on it.

But I'm also interested in doing something extra but I sure as hell have no interest in $100-150 for a billet aluminum catch can

Is there a decent can that is made from regular steel or cast aluminum or something that isn't priced to the moon? I've read about the Husky air compressor filters and that might be an option but I would rather have a can because they look cleaner.

The ebay can I know is junk and I hate the external hose "gauge" on them anyway. Worst case maybe use one of those but plug the holes and add some kind of filter element or sponge inside?

I will never understand why every aftermarket company thinks we need "billet aluminum" from valve covers to toilet paper....

We have several different styles of catch cans available.

Just get a 350ml catch can off ebay.. they are about $20 shipped. im using one and a few of my buddies are too.. work great. just throw in a newer style PCV valve before the can to keep pressure maintained and it will work perfect.. i drain mine every oil change... usually has about 100ml of oil

Well I made this for $6, see if it works:

2 caps, a pipe joint, 2 fittings, a piece of hose, and a chunk of dishwashing sponge.

What foam is that? Some coarse steel wool might work better and won't clog.

I'm going to get some before I install it probably. The hose doesn't reach the foam completely, the thought was that the mist would be coming down towards the foam and likely catch some of it before the air was pulled through the other fitting on the side.

Worst case scenario is this works as good as a regular overflow type catch can but it's smaller and less bulky. I can just empty it after long drives or track outings.

I'd run that hose a little bit longer and through the foam rubber and mount it as far as you can away from the engine heat. Doing this will allow more of the oil vapors to form droplets that won't end up going back through the intake. I'd also suggest something like a brillo pad cut to fit instead of the flimsy foam rubber.

Yeah I have extra short pieces of hose so I will try that.

My hose runs along the driver side valve cover into the driver side vacuum port on the Fast intake so for now it will just sit on the Corvette accessory drive bracket for the alternator so I can just splice it in. This way once it's painted black it won't be very noticeable and I can keep a 3/8" to 3/8" brass nipple with me so that if the part fails for any reason the line can be rejoined to itself in seconds to get me home.

I also switched to the new style valve that has the small hole instead of the check valve in it. Not looking for perfection here just something to reduce the amount of oil in the intake. The car usually loses about a quart in 3000 miles, just didn't realize it was likely all going into the intake.

So steel wool is pushed up at the top of the unit by the inside walls of the lower cap. This forces it into the hose where it should hopefully get caught and drip to the bottom while the air is drawn through the wool and out into the intake. We will see.

I've been using the cheapo plastic fuel filters, which
come in various configurations - I like the one that
has a bottom bowl with the two nipples inline on the
top. I only use the one, in the PCV makeup air line,
because this is where I have seen the snail tracks
in the TB. This is the unchecked air path for WOT
blowby.

Why would you think the container material would make it better?

OP last year I made something similar but larger and located it in front of the driver's wheel out of sight. I had $50 in everything. It uses a condenser to cool down the vapors and condense the droplets better. I went from steel wool to Chore Boy for the media. It works much better than the pretty ones you pay $100 for.

Catch Can experiment.

Another little project idea I used to have way back when.... If you have deleted the AC (FBody specific, this is) you can do this exact thing with the accumulator canister. Has it's own bracket and all... pretty trick if you ask me.

How about an air seperator from the air compressor section at Lowes or Home Depot? It would be cheap and worked fine for me on my 98.

The $20 on ebay works ok. It has the site tube you don't like but I used one over a year and it worked just fine.

Did you ever put that idea into action?

I might have to look into that some more when I get home.

No, I went with a Norris instead. But I still thought it was a pretty cool way to do it, especially if you live in ****-Fornia or some other strict emissions place.

Because I have no interest in spending that much just because it's made of "billet" aluminum. I loathe overpriced billet crap that could just as well be made from something affordable and just as useful.

Haven't put in yet, been busy with halloween/birthday party and company but I will update the thread again after I get it installed and do some driving.

I spent $20 on my catch can... PVC pipe, 2 pvc caps, 2 brass nipples and little filter. It's been working fine on my blown ls1 for 2-3 years now. I have a small piece of oil absorbent pad stuffed in the bottom of the can to soak up the oil. I change the pad once a year.
