Default Question about the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) Sensor

Hey guys just wondering... I just got my car started (FINALLY) and I had to run a custom air intake setup so I haven't gotten the air temperature sensor installed yet. What are the symptoms of not having an IAT sensor hooked up?

I find the car hesitates in starting and when it does get going it's hard to keep it idling. After I feather the peddle a couple of times the problem seems to get better and it holds idle but...I'm wondering that if the IAT isn't hooked up that is it causing the initial startup problem. Let me know what you guys think!

You need that, the PCM needs to know the temperature of the incoming air. Just drill a hole in the intake pipe and stick it in.

I actually need to do this since the previous owner of the car stuck the IAT in the headlight

I know it's necessary, obviously it's there for a reason. But back to my initial question, what are the symptoms that occur when it is not hooked up?

An open IAT will read like -40F. In speed density (and
idle / low RPM air mass calc is mostly speed density
driven) this will cause an error toward more air mass,
so more fuel shot resulting in rich running. You also
have a bunch of secondary stuff going on.

IAT outside the engine bay is a good option, not a
bad one. The errors tend toward benign and you lose
some heat soak issues (like hard hot starting).

It doesn't cause an issue, seeing as the headlight is not wired in. ahh well the car runs at least.

Ok so just to close this thread on a happy note. I bought new plugs because the old ones got fouled so bad (too much fuel being dumped). Bought a new IAT sensor and drilled a bung out for it. All is right in the world now! Car runs great. Thanks for the help you guys!
