Default A "How not to" make your own O2 extensions

This isn't LS related and will probably get locked but I found it quite amusing. 98 GT came into work today and I was luckily enough to get it.

Customer complains of CEL on and engine not running right.

6 of the 8 spark plug wires were on the wrong cylinders. Scanned for DTC's and found a few O2 heater circut codes.

Put the car in the air and found that someone didn't want to spend the money on O2 extensions or buy O2 sensors with longer wires.

I think using a wiring harness meant for trailer lights was a nice touch.

I don't see how the car ran without back firing through the intake/exhaust.

A kid owns the car. He traded his truck for it. He did put the wires on wrong but he didn't do the headers or the hack job wiring. The wiring harness is going to have to be rebuilt and several pig tail connectors.

Everyone in the shop today came and looked at it. It quite epic. Some of the worst work I've seen in a while. I feel bad for the kid and I'm going to try and help him out as much as I can.

Thanks for the write up, going to try to tackle this tomorrow... I'm giving myself a time cap of 3 minutes to complete the task... Anything over that I have failed.

LOL. Remember the trick is to use the pre made trailer wiring.

I've seen some pretty amazing wiring repairs. One of the best was the 85 TA that was towed in because it wouldn't start. I found speaker wire run to the starter and just twisted and taped to the wires they were connected to.

Soldering is so cheap and easy it amazes me people are too lazy to watch a 5 min YouTube video and figure out how to do it. I use a $5 torch style cigarette lighter for most wire repairs, 60/40 solder from radio shack is like $1 or $2, and shrink tube from harbor freight is a few bucks.

A lot of things make sense when you realize a lot of people do drugs. There's a purple and yellow third gen Camaro in town. When I first saw it I couldn't believe someone thought it looked good, then I remembered people do drugs lol.

You sir, are a great mechanic. I honestly mean this, most mechanics would tell this kid he needs a new engine and is gonna spend $5k+. Whether or not he realizes it, he appreciates your help.

Just got the car done actually. Repaired the wiring harness for the rears. replaced most of the harness for the fronts with new pig tails. new 02's front and rear. Soldered and shrink tubing, no trailer wiring this time. LOL

Replaced spark plugs, put the factory coils back on, fixed the horrible throttle body gasket leak. Car fired right up. Runs and drives great. Much to my surprised it didn't have anything else wrong with it.
