What's needed? Ls6 valley cover or catch can?
Hey guys, I pulled off my intake because a new ported fast 92 will be replacing it and I noticed quite a bit of oil in the intake ports of the heads. These heads have been on for 2-3 years but only have about 2500-3000 miles on them. I keep the oil changed with Mobil 1 religiously. I'm obviously going to clean everything up before I put the new intake on but, to stop this from happening again, do you guys suggest a catch can or the newest ls6 valley cover? I'm gonna try to get some pics up in a few minutes. Thanks fellas.

The 'new' LS6 valley is redesigned to work without a catch can.
I have both.
Over a full season of hard driving, there was just over 1/4" of oil in the catch can. Not bad, considering the problems folks have had with this issue.
I'm about to remove the heads for a port job, and will determine whether the intake has a film of oil, or not.
Different people have different results, it seems.

Hmmm. I wasn't thinking the answer would be both but after cleaning out my Bbk to sell, I'm gonna agree with you guys. There was a bunch of oil all caked into the runners. I definitely don't want this happening again. Sorry about the lack of pics. I haven't been able to figure out how to get pics up on the site.

I just bought a 2004 ls6 valley cover for my 1999 c5 and bought a Mike Norris catch can as well when doing my FAST swap, even with the ls6 valley cover my catch can catches some oil. I was just happy to get rid of the ls1 style PCV with all the rotten hoses running all over the place.

I run both the LS6 style and a Elite Engineering Can. Just be aware that depending on your block year, you may need to remove a little bit of excess block aluminum on the front right side of the valley. Not a big deal, just take your time and put LOTS of rags in there to keep the shavings from getting into the engine.

When my LS6 valley & can went in, I followed those PCV routing schematics that pop up here, now & then...not sure if I even need the external, or whether the new LS6 valley has an internal PCV provision. Thought I read somewhere that there is an internal PCV.

OK, I've answered my own question...No external PCV needed with new style LS6 valley #12577927.
Regardless, I've never noticed a decrease in the dipstick oil level.

I'll probably be purchasing a new style LS6 valley cover, but not a catch can right away. According to the diagram in post #8, how would I route the hoses with the new style LS6 valley cover without having a catch can?

Another question... Will I need to change my coolant crossovers over to the LS6 crossover with rear coolant plugs? I assume I do, but I'd rather not have to block off the rear ports.

You can do the LS6 version with the rear blockoffs, or, you may be able to join the rear passages somehow...don't know if there is a rear crossover, or, you can shave the ribs attached to the bottom of the LS6 intake, which will give the old LS1 crossover enough room to fit.
I have the LS6 w/rear blockoffs.
Ribs cut off of LS6 intake...

Just buy ls6 tubes and block off's for the rear. People say it creates a cooling problem but if that's the case then why did they put them on their, at the time, highest end sports car? They've been doing fine on my c5 FRC for the last 10,000 miles. I've seen people bend the tubes around the protrusions of the ls6 valley and grind the fins off the ls6 intake and make it work, but I didn't have the time to do that so I just bought the ls6 system. If you have the time to do that I'd give it a try, I could see how the ls1 lines cool better.

So with a 99z28 that I want to put a fast on the easiest way possible. I should get 04+ Ls6 valley cover, Ls6 coolant tube, and catch can. Anything else? I would like to get rid of that ugly pcv ****.
