Exclamation New vs Old LS6 Valley Cover ?

I had my car tuned and found i have a slight oil consumption issue. I was told to run the 5.3 pcv and ls6 valley cover and it would help. My question came up when i found everyone saying to go with the 04 "new style" valley cover but it doesnt use the same pcv. Does the new VC still work well for oil consumption or should I go with the old VC and the 5.3 pcv?

The new one has a built in oil/air separator, no external pcv valve needed. Install is really clean. I had one on my ls1 and I ordered the pre bent rubber hose with it. The new one should work fine for you.

The new style uses an internal valve in the ls6 valley tray, the old style uses a real old style pcv valve hooked up in a hose, cant comment on oil consumption, but I like this setup as its much neater hose wise, one c shaped hose from valley to tb, then one hose to pside valve cover, thats it!

Here is some info on the new design:

"What they did was to engineer valley mounted oil separators which uses internal baffling to force the crankcase vapors in a circuitous (think roundabout) flow. This in turn causes the oil to separate and drain back into the engine."

And also there is a fixed orifice set in the valley cover, therefore no need for external PCV valve. The older style does not have the orifice and therefore requires an external PCV valve.

Scoggin-Dickey carries both parts.

Part no for 04 style : 12577927 $74.69

I'll be installing the 04+ LS6 valley cover and tube, along with 2 new knock sensors. I'll be taking pics, and I'll post up.

I would do this first to keep the oil in the engine. Then if you still have oil consumption, add the catch can.

This is what I had to cut off for the block. I used a hacksaw to cut some maybe 1/2" notches towards the block, and then used some vise grips to break it off. I found this to be better than a dremel that blew metal shavings everywhere. The valley cover fit in snug. I didn't take any pics of the valley cover internals because you can see those online...

This is from LS1howto

and then what it looks like without it. Note to the left of the throttle body the U-Shaped hose pulling vacuum from the valley cover to the intake. No more PCV hose running around the motor. Much cleaner..

I was also replacing a bad knock sensor while I was in there

I'm thinking of upgrading to the LS6 valley cover and wanted to know if all I needed was this parts or would I need anything else to do the swap? and if I upgrade, would I still pass the smog visual in California?

That's the older style LS6 cover though. Does anyone have pics of the new style LS6 cover?
