Default This Came Out of my Exhaust

2001 Camaro z/28. 110,00 miles.

I have had a rattle the past few days under car, and today I banged on my Cats to hear a rattle from them....I shot this out of a pipe too (Picture below)...its honeycomb looking. I assume obviously its from the Cat.

What am I looking at getting these replaced. I do my own work on cars, but I cannot do this.

Is there anything to watch out for when getting these replaced at shops, and has anyone had them replaced recently that might have a pricetag that I could compare to?

Thanks.

My dad owns an exhaust shop, they will normally cut the old ones out then weld a new one in. I'd go with an aftermarket cat. I don't know about an fbody but oem cats can be really expensive sometimes.

Thats from your cats no doubt. I would usually just gut out my cats before putting them on again. You can usually just get a Magnaflow high flow cat for less than $100bucks. Muffler shops tend to overprice for putting a catalyc converter on your car.

There is a trick to that. Ask there hourly rate and watch them put it on. It works around here lol.

If you are in one of the 'un-libertarian, Gestapo' type visual inspection, as well as OBD 2 plug-in, and/or dyno states NOT "out there in the middle" (UNlike most everyone on here it seems, by the way they ALL tell you to just gut/delete/tune them out/etc.), you are probably going to have to replace them.

The stockers just bolt right in, BUT if you have a Cali type emissions car, which WERE shipped to the other 'Gestapo'-type states as well, the Magnaflows will not even do the trick as your ECM O2 sensor parameters are set to a MUCH more sensitive level as per the differences between the front and rear catcon readings.

In that case you will need a set of the actual CARB certified catcons (sometimes not even "50 state" ones will work) to keep the SES light off, and pass emissions.

if your in a Commie state, go OEM or stricter replacement, otherwise you will not pass smog. If you are in a "Non-Sniffer" state, like TX for example, remove the cat or buy a high flow cat for cheap, or do nothing. If you see a service light on dash, take to a tuner.

I've simply cut an access hole in the side of the cat to pull the remaining junk out when this happens. It's tough to weld back up since the metal is so thin, but it would at least take care of the issue for the time being.

Obviously, this is if one lives in an area with liberal inspection policy.

You can usually get the complete assembly, and just replace it. Its really no harder than doin a cat back exhaust. Your local parts store can get them. They are expensive, but will probly still save some money over shop price. Just make sure they will warranty for a check engine light. That should mean they should mee emission standards.

One other solution is the spark plug anti-fouler as a spacer on the rear O2 sensor trick.

But sadly, in said 'commie' states they are trained to look for these as well during the visual.
