Noise does not make horsepower. I am sure it will sound like *** inside the car at most any speeds, especially at wide open throttle.

That's a pretty bold statement considering a lot of the guys on here run open headers all the time. Its all up to the sound OP wants, I would say instead of a 4 inch pipe just get an electric cutout on there so you can make it loud whenever you want to.

Bold or not, it is what the OP wants. Does a new zr1 need poud exhaust to make big hp? Just because everyone else does it does not mean it is a good thing. Skinnies uses 6 mufflers and runs low 10's and is not annoying loud. I remember guys with big block chevelles in the '70's ripping off their exhaust and it did little. You can make hp with quiet exhaust.

Whatever.......

I have a 3.5", y-pipe back Mufflex system on the car now, only it is ALL 304 stainless (unlike most of their systems which are aluminized steel), except for the Magnaflow 'motorhome' muffler which is 409 stainless, and I powdercoated black anyway for stealth/ANTI-bling reasons (like the tailpipe as well).

I am VERY happy with it!!

I know it's subjective, but how would you describe it in terms of loudness? I have a 3" into 3.5" FM merge, reduced to 3" all the way back. I've thought about going to the Mufflex for a nice, clean 3.5" system. But I don't want louder than what I have.

what exhaust setup caused the hole in the gas tank? I took off my gas tank heat shield because I just installed tsp true dual exhaust and angled the exhaust down and to the outside of the car.

lolwut?

A Zr1 comes with dual 3" from factory....Dual 3" moves more air than a single 4" exhaust and i have yet to hear a "quite" ZR1. Well i have, and it was stock.

I have 2" Kooks with the 3.5" Collector. I then had a 3.5" y-pipe made to mate to my 4" Mufflex exhaust.

I'll post up some pics of the y-pipe when I get home (I don't have any on my photobucket right now).

Which paint did you use??

I've been using the DEI Hi-Temp silicone based satin black (meant for exhaust wrap coating mainly), but it has been bubbling up and peeling off over the winter, even though the pipes do mot get very hot back there.

Does ANYONE make a hi-temp primer for exhaust???

I might try the Wurth satin black laquer in the spring, but I'd like to use a primer first.

Also; do you EVER notice exhaust fumes coming back into the cabin of your car from having the turndown end so far from the bumper??
Mine currently dumps right about where yours does and sometimes (at lights/in traffic/etc.) I can smell it quite strong inside the car.
I am thinking about getting one of those huge Gibson diesel turndowns (3.5" in/4.0" out), and welding it on to exit closer to the bumper, then painting it black as well (NO polished bling for me!).

Yes, it IS very subjective, and hard to describe, but it is DEFINITELY quieter than the 'NHRA Pro Stock sound' that everyone on here loves so well (and that will also deafen you VERY quickly ).

There is a slight rumble at idle (even though I have a stock cam/heads/exhaust manifolds/catcons), but it does have a decent roar when going WOT, and NO DRONE(S) whatsoever at ANY speeds/gears on the highway.

I had the mufflex 4 inch and had no problems with clearance. IIRC they also have a few choices on the muffler to suit your taste. I went with the spintech I think and it had a good sound but not too loud.

Same here, Mufflex 4", 2" Kooks, Flowmaster 3.5" merge through a Magnaflow muffler. Quite a bit quieter than my flowmaster cat back, deeper sound. My gas mileage went up with this setup by 2 mpg after it was tuned. My setup fits well and I have never had an issue with clearance. Hope this helps.

The paint I used on the back was just some implement paint I put on because it was all that I had and I just wanted a little protection from rust for the time being. I've been using normal engine enamel but it seems to fade away over time. And on the exhaust fumes I honestly haven't driven it enough to really notice.

1 and 7/8" headers, 3.5" y, and 4" to all the way back into a mufflex. It dumps all the way at the back under the left rear of the bumper as seen above.

To the guy above, with a stock cam, the car was silent. went 12's on motor but had an impressive 111mph and trapped 125mph on the kit. I think it was due to a big exhaust.

Trapping 111 with headers is not very impressive. 109-110 is free mod territory.

Here's a pic of mine.

Most ls1's don't do that, I'm sure a handfull have, but most in my area def don
t. That's with 3.27's and a 28" tall tire on the stock stall. Slp lid and no tune on top of that.

Went 11.50, but I also don't think a lot go 125 mph with the same mods and a 125 shot with 12% of what ever stock timing is taken out with a diablo... and no tune still.

I have a lt headers to a flow master y pipe then into a 4inch single over the axle. It sounds awesome. I did single for ground clearance reasons. I'll see if I have some pics to post up.

i put a dynomax 3.5" muffler in place of my magnaflow catback muffler that had dual tips, then made a "hidden" tail pipe much like the mufflex system you can buy. the car still has stock manifolds, and stock ypipe(hollowed out cats).

Quick Reply: 4 inch singel pipe?
